I was a staunch B&D fan back then. It really was them with each other, or nobody.

But I was won over with Toni. I give so, so much credit to the casting of Rebecca Gayheart, aka Noxzema Girl. She was perfectly cast. Angelic, super sweet, but real enough for Dylan. And best part? She was SO different from both Brenda and Kelly.

Her casting is what made me believe Dylan could fall in love with her so fast. Because, really, what man wouldn't? They were just absolutely freaking beautiful together. And I believe Dylan would've adored her for the rest of his days.

Luke and Rebecca had fantastic chemistry

and she was incredibly endearing and strong as Toni. Perfect balance of cute and tough.

I agree, just, her looks and their chemistry were not enough for me to completely like the SL, because I did not find the writing convincing. But anyway, it was next to the last watchable 90210 SL for me.

The last was Kelly's addiction to cocaine. After that, I think I never liked any SL again.

It was a fast development, but I think they did a good job, given that Luke was gone by episode 10. Their chemistry together was far more compelling to me than watching Dylan juggle two best friends in Season 3 until he decided on one

that love triangle semi-destroyed him in my eyes, so the Toni thing must have been good because I felt it redeemed him on a lot of levels. He grew up with her. It showed in his reaction to her death and how he just leaves town rather than falling off the wagon again.

It redeemed him for me too, but some other interpersonal relationships also did. Erica, friendship with Brenda, in the sense that he was really there for her, not abandoning Kelly when she needed him, helping David and Andrea, a lot of things with Brandon.

Good points

I wish Season 5 had ended on a better note for him, though. Attempting to steal Kelly from his best friend?

Such a poor decision by the writers after the strong subplots involving him saving Erica and helping Andrea through her marriage troubles.

They all coincided

probably the best time on the show for couples, even though I didn't like Brandon/Susan (or Kelly/Colin, but at least their story-arc became interesting)

It's that sad scene where she confronts him to say that her father told her about who Dylan really is and they're on the verge of breaking up.

Looking back, I really hate the cliche nonsense of having a Godfather, Corleone family-type father who won't let you date the ~bad guy~ (even though the father's the real bad guy) it's all so Movie cliche
