Has Val ever been to psychotherapist/psychiatrist? Almost everyone in the gang did, but I'm not sure about her. She definitely needed one. Suicide/killing of her father, whatever the SL was, rape by her father, by Noah's brother, maybe also someone else, her own suicide attempts... Not to mention her own ambiguous desires - to fit into the gang, but make their lives miserable. Her characterization was all over the place.

Nope! I don't think she did. I guess they couldn't give her that kind of treatment for fear that it would resolve her issues to the point where she couldn't act out too much.

She really had a fixation on the things the other women had, or she thought they had. First Brenda, then Kelly. Probably because she realized that Kelly's actually got all the she considered Brenda's. I guess she was traumatized and unhappy so she was trying to be someone she wasn't all the time.
But there was too much obsession with other women, really. I even start to think that Val was a latent lesbian.

That's an interesting point. Definitely in the beginning she felt that the only way to attain the attention she was looking for would be to play a character of sorts.
I don't think the show ever suggested she had latent feelings for women. But it's funny, if you were to ask me how I thought Valerie would respond to such a proposition/opportunity, I'd say she'd lean more favorably on the continuum. Other characters like Kelly and Donna might just be put off and shut it down.
