Pacino Eyes Lead Role in Adaptation of Gladwell’s ‘Blink’
Any guesses on the tween co-star?

The Hollywood Reporter has a story regarding a film I am purely interested in only because Stephen Gaghan is aboard as writer and director. Gaghan penned the script for Traffic and wrote and directed Syriana in 2005, two films that don’t necessarily lend perfectly to what it sounds like will be attempted with the filmed adaptation of Malcolm Gladwell’s nonfiction bestseller “Blink”, but at the same time it makes the proposition that much more interesting.

First off, Gaghan’s script will center on the relationship between an older man and the twenty something son he was never close to. The two reconnect early on in the pic, and the boy, an idealistic drifter who’s teaching in a downtown New York school, and the father, a finance type living in Connecticut, must navigate their new relationship.

THR’s Steven Zeitchik describes the rest of the story as “Scent of a Woman with a finance-y twist” as the son has that “blink” thing going, and can size up people and situations on a dime. The father character spots this, and both wants to help the boy find himself and use him to make some dough on Wall Street. Sounds a little bit like Rain Man if you ask me, just taking place on Wall Street instead of in Vegas. Oh, and without the autism.

Lined up for the role as the father is Al Pacino, who is currently in talks for the part, and Zeitchik says there is a surprising “tween appeal” surrounding the role of the son, which immediately makes me think we are talking about Zac Efron or Robert Pattinson.

Word is the script is ready to go and a few pieces need to slide into place as the film will be shopped around the Cannes Film Festival this May and should things work out it will go into production this fall.

Al Pacino Blinks
By Katey Rich: 2009-05-13 13:07:35

Even though everyone in the world seems to have read Malcolm Gladwell's mega-bestseller Blink, it never seemed like the kind of book that ought to become a movie. A nonfiction tome about how people make split-second decisions? Oh yeah, that's cinematic. But Leonardo DiCaprio optioned movie rights to the book years ago, Syriana writer and director Stephen Gaghan signed on to write and direct it, and now it seems that Al Pacino will be taking the starring role.

This is all according to THR's Risky Business Blog, which says that Pacino will play a New York financier, and a star with "tween appeal" will play his son, who realizes he's good at making those split-second decisions that Gladwell addresses in the book. How will this be turned into an actual movie plot? Pacino's character will use his gifted son to make extra money on Wall Street, and presumably in the end, all of them will learn a lesson.

It's a story that has potential, so long as it uses the book as more of a jumping-off point than anything to direct the film's content. Yeah, it's cheap to just use a popular title and then make a completely different movie, but I'd rather they do that that make a completely boring movie. Plus, let's talk about that tween appeal! Is it Robert Pattinson? Zac Efron? That other kid from High School Musical? Are they just going to go Scent of a Woman style and bring back Chris O'Donnell, assuming that the former Robin still gets the tweens all excited? So many possibilities!

The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud
Quote:
Zac Efron is negotiating to re-team with "17 Again" director Burr Steers on an adaptation of the novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud."

The film will likely be the next for Efron, who just ankled Paramount's "Footloose" remake.

Former "Good Morning America" exec producer Ben Sherwood wrote the book, about a caretaker at a cemetery who manages to have weekly meetings with a younger brother whose accidental death he feels was his fault.

Marc Platt is producing, and while Efron's deal is still being negotiated, Steers is set and has already begun polishing a script originally written by Craig Pearce, with James Schamus and Lewis Colick also turning in drafts.

Production will begin in July. The Efron-Steers collaboration "17 Again" will be released by New Line/Warner Bros. on April 17.

Paramount is meeting other actors to topline the Kenny Ortega-directed "Footloose," which the studio still expects will be on its 2010 release schedule.

A script rewrite for "Footloose" was turned in by Susannah Grant, and the studio is firming up music plans. Four songs from the original film will be used, and six new tunes will be added, from various artists. The film will not be a burst-into-song musical, though the heroine in the new film will be a singer.

Zac Efron Holds Meetings With The Dead

Zac Efron is out of Footloose and looking for something more serious. Variety says he’s negotiating to topline The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud, based on a novel whose cover has autumn colors and a falling leave on it. That kind of cover folks, is the stuff Oscars (or at least movies Oprah loves), are made of.

The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud is about a cemetery caretaker who survives a tragic accident and suddenly sees the world in a whole new way. That new way of seeing the world includes having weekly meetings with his dead little brother. The description on the book cover claims it contains “a love that transcends everything you may have believed about life and death.” Yep. It’s that kind of movie.

I really want to hate Efron for his lingering association with Disney’s High School Musical cash-cow, but the guy deserves credit. He’s avoided being turned into a male Miley Cyrus clone by mixing up those Disney puff-flicks with more serious and interesting stuff. He was great in Hairspray and later this year he’ll be in an Orson Welles pic directed by Orson Linklater. Say what you want about High School Musical but with choices like this Zac Efron may have the chops to stick around.

Zac Efron Holds Meetings With The Dead

Quote:
Determined not to be typecast as the-teenage-boy-who-sings, Zac Efron may have discovered the perfect dark, depressing, grown-up role for his career.

The super pretty actor is planning to re-team with 17 Again director Burr Steers for an adaptation of the novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud," according to Variety.

The book, written by "Good Morning America" producer (and apparent Renaissance man) Ben Sherwood, is about a cemetery caretaker who talks to dead people. Zac's depiction of the role won't be completely Bruce Willis, though - he can only communicate with his younger brother, whose accidental death he blames himself for. Nothing like keepin' those dead people around to clear your conscience!

Production on the movie doesn't begin until July, so Zac will have a few more months to finish being 17 Again.

Johnny Quest rumors
Quote:
Now it looks like the rumors are true and that the plum role is going to Zac Efron, the 21-year-old pretty-boy star who is hoping the action role will help him dance away from youth-pop vehicles and whip up a career-redefining franchise in the Indiana Jones mode. (Dwayne Johnson is circling the project as well and would be the brawny version of pilot and man-of-action Race Bannon.)

The choice of Efron is going to stir up fans of the classic Quest series because, well, Jonny was just an 11-year-old in the prime-time cartoons of the 1960s that so deftly pulled on Milton Canniff, Ian Fleming and Rudyard Kipling for their spirit of exotic adventure. I myself think it's a surprising but interesting choice, and I'm one of the people in town who think Efron (like Justin Timberlake) has a big future ahead of him and that people will look back on his frothy Disney duty as just the early steps in the choreography of his career. Making Jonny older will change the property, to be sure, but maybe it will make it richer as well.

Moviehole sent Robert Sanchez over to meet The Rock a few weeks back at the “Race to Witch Mountain” Junket.

Always wearing the scoop badge, Robert came back with an exclusive bit of upcoming film news : Seems Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, “Race” director Andy Fickman, and “High School Musical” moppet Zac Efron are teaming up for a feature film version of the cartoon classic “The Adventures of Johnny Quest”!

Johnson confirms that he’ll be Race Bannon, and that rumours suggesting Zac Efron might be Johnny Quest are on the money. Efron isn’t a lock though – and Johnson’s all ears.
Moviehole. The Rock in Jonny Quest movie

Quote:
Warner Bros. is working on a live action version of Jonny Quest. That’s an idea that should go over just about as well as Speed Racer did, unless of course they cast a really big name to carry the pic. And hey, it sounds like that’s just what Warner Bros. is trying to get.

Moviehole reports that WB may cast Zac Efron to play Jonny Quest, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to play the Quest team’s designated heavy Race Bannon. Purists should have no problem with Rock, he’s the right build and he’s the kind of box office draw which Speed Racer didn’t have. Efron though, is likely to put fans in an uproar.

In the original Jonny Quest cartoons, Jonny is a kid. Age 12. Zac Efron is 22. But he’s a big star, courtesy of the High School Musical franchise. Like The Rock, he’ll bring in a crowd and it’s easy to see why Warner Bros. might want a big name rather than some unknown, 12-year-old kid. Besides, Efron can pass for at least 16 or 17. That’ll have to be close enough.

Directing the movie, according to IESB may be Andy Fickman. He’s just finished directing The Rock’s lastest movie, Disney’s Race to Witch Mountain.

Hairspray 2 & Ohio rumors

What about Hairspray 2?

Zac: Hairspray 2, yeah, I read something about that, I think it's an idea at this point, but once again I haven't really been in very many discussions about it, so I don't know if it's going to happen. It would be fun, it would be great."

Its cool that Zac is taking time off, most movie stars don't do that. Some times you just need to clear your head for a bit or else you may loose yourself in all the fame and stuff.
