Quote:
Although most Booker T. Washington Magnet High School students had seen Monique Coleman in high school before, BTW Principal Quesha Starks had to make sure Coleman wasn't accosted by frenzied students before leaving the school Thursday.

That's because the high school the students had seen her in was "High School Musical," the movie that created 2006's best-selling American album with 4.1 million copies sold.

Coleman told students from BTW and other area high schools not just about her successes, such as the subsequent "High School Musical" productions and her appearance on "Dancing With the Stars," but how they could succeed.

While she discussed famous co-stars, movie premieres and exotic locales, Coleman's main message focused on the importance of hard work, sometimes taking a leap of faith and the difference people (even high schoolers) can make in the world.

Her visit to the area was part of her role as the United Nation's "youth champion," which is part of the International Year of Youth program that aims to raise awareness about issues confronting youth and to highlight contributions they've made in their communities.
"You're never too young to actually make a difference in other people's lives," she said.

Coleman talked to students for about an hour, and students serenaded her with a song and performance. She also plugged her website GimmeMo.com, which Coleman said has advice for teens without sounding too much like "an after-school special." She also took questions, which ran the gamut ranging from cyber bullying to Zac Efron.

She encouraged students to be confident and to remember that bullies are often those who are most in need of a hug or a friend, and in time everything passes. And as for Zac Efron, well, he's a good friend and great to work with.

Starks, who did indeed see to it that Coleman was able to leave school without too much fanfare, said the visit was important for students and for much more than just the wow factor of fame.
"I think students sometimes have a false perception of what it's like to be in the limelight," Stark said. "There's not enough focus on service."

She said Coleman's visit, though, showed a different side of celebrity -- one of community involvement and giving back.
"They needed to hear that," she said. "Her visit was important because she showed the benevolent side of celebrity."

For students Coleman and her message were much more down to earth than her TV and film credits would suggest (students 'oohed' and 'aahed' over her roles in "Veronica Mars" and "Malcolm in the Middle").

BTW student Russell Alexander marveled at how relatable he found Coleman, describing her as a "a regular person."
"I thought it was really a remarkable thing to witness," Alexander said.

As a singer, Alexander said Coleman's talk gave him insight into what he needs to be doing and the impact he could have in the future.

Alexander's classmate Shannon Powers was also enthused by Coleman's visit. She was among those musical theater students to sing for Coleman.

She said she enjoyed the actress' visit, even if she was initially somewhat skeptical. Powers said while her classmates got excited about Coleman's visit, she was wary, but left feeling impressed.
"I could feel the vibe in the room," she said. "She inspiring."
