The Lucky One
Quote:
Zac Efron Signs on for the Nicholas Sparks Romance, The Lucky One

Whether you accept it or not, Zac Efron continues to grow up, slowly morphing from teen idol to straight-up ladies' man: Vulture hears that he is in negotiations to play a former Marine in Warner Bros. forthcoming adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' novel, The Lucky One. This would be the seventh Sparks novel to make it to the big screen (just eight more to go!); Efron would play the titular “One,” who returns from three tours in Iraq to (where else?) North Carolina. There he searches for a mysterious woman in a random snapshot he found — a snapshot he believes was his good luck charm throughout the second gulf war. The Lucky One is being produced by Sparks's own lucky charm, Denise DiNovi, who'd previously brought the author's Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, and Nights in Rodanthe all to the big screen.

We also hear that separately — but in an similar effort to reach a broader, older, audience — Efron recently attached himself to Die in a Gun Fight, a hot new script from recent NYU grads and first-time screenwriters Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. In the Tarantino-esque blend of Gossip Girl, True Romance and Romeo and Juliet, Efron would play Ben, an underachieving, deadbeat son of a famous New York high society attorney who gets himself in over his head when he falls for the daughter of his father's nemesis - a girl who is already busy being stalked by an obsessive French professor. Die is set up with producer Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, Speed) but has yet to find a studio, though we hear it's headed out to directors and financiers shortly.

Zac Efron is in negotiations to star in Warner Bros.' "The Lucky One," based on the Nicholas Sparks novel about a Marine searching for a mysterious woman.
The film will be produced by Denise Di Novi and Kevin McCormick, who segued last year from Warner production president to a studio deal under the Langley Park banner. Scott Hicks is attached to helm.

Di Novi's produced three other Sparks adaptations for the studio -- "Nights in Rodanthe," "A Walk to Remember" and "Message in a Bottle." Di Novi Pictures prexy Alison Green*span is exec producing.

Will Fetters adapted "Lucky One," which revolves around a Marine who survives three tours in Iraq and attributes his good fortune to a photograph he carried of a woman he has never met. He sets out to meet her when he returns to North Carolina.

Efron signed a producing deal earlier this year with Warner Bros., but isn't attached as a producer on "The Lucky One." He next appears in U's "Charlie St. Cloud," opening Friday.

Zac Efron fires up workplace comedy(THR)
Quote:
Warner Bros. has picked up an untitled workplace comedy by Jason Filardi for Zac Efron to star in and produce. Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are in negotiations to produce via their Offspring Entertainment banner.

Attaching himself to the Filardi workplace comedy is the latest move for Efron, who set up his production shingle at Warners in February but has quietly been putting the pieces together with his manager, Alchemy Entertainment's Jason Barrett.

The company now has a name -- Ninjas Runnin' Wild Prods. -- and has staffed up, with former Fox executive Jason Young coming aboard as head of development and to act as point person at NRW. Young spent five years at Fox, working on "X-Men: The Last Stand," "Live Free or Die Hard" and "Max Payne," among other movies.

Angie Edgar, a former assistant and creative executive at Alchemy, has been tapped to act as NRW's creative executive.

Barrett will oversee NRW's operations with Efron.

The Filardi workplace comedy, on which Barrett also will be a producer, is a reuniting of the team behind "17 Again," Efron's high school body-switch comedy that grossed $136 million worldwide last year. The film allowed Efron to move beyond his "High School Musical" roots while trying to build on his core audience.

In addition to that comedy, the following projects are in development at NRW:

-- "Art of the Steal," set up at Warners three weeks ago, has Kevin McCormick's Langley Park Prods. producing with NRW. The project, centering on a master thief, is based on the Wired magazine article by Joshua Bearman; the producers are out to writers.

-- "Einstein Theory," a time-travel story from Tim Calpin and Kevin Jakubowski also is set up at Warners. Mark Gordon, Bryan Zuriff and "Get Him to the Greek" director Nick Stoller are producing what is intended to be an Efron vehicle.

-- "Fire" is based on the Brian Michael Bendis graphic novel about a college student recruited to take part in a special CIA training program. Bendis is writing the adaptation, set up at Universal, with Neal Moritz and David Engel producing. Efron and Barrett are executive producing.

-- "Snabba cash" is a remake of the Swedish thriller directed by Daniel Espinosa. The project is an Atlas Entertainment-NRW co-production, with Efron producing alongside Chuck Roven, Richard Suckle and Fredik Wikstrom. Michael Hjorth and Barrett are executive producing.

Separate from NRW, Efron and Barrett also are involved in producer capacities with Leslie Dixon's untitled thriller set up at Mandate. Barrett is producing with Greg Shapiro and Dixon, and Efron executive produces with Mandate's Nathan Kahane.

In a time in which much of the industry is cutting back or contracting, NRW's strategy is unusual for its broad base. The company has been aggressive in finding vehicles and opportunities for Efron, rather than waiting for the studios to come calling.

It also has been transitioning the 22-year old Efron into an adult actor. Such projects as "Fire" and "Snabba" are designed to expand his portfolio to include an action thriller and an edgy drama while also allowing him to work with such Hollywood players as Roven and Moritz.

Snabba Cash
Quote:
Get ready for Zac Efron, the money launderer.

Efron is attached to star in and produce a remake of “Snabba cash,” the hot Swedish property that was the subject of a heavy Hollywood bidding war and has just found a home with Warner Bros.

Warners bought the remake rights for Efron to produce via the new Warners-based shingle he runs with manager Jason Barrett.

Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are producing, along with original producer Fredrik Wikstrom. Michael Hjorth will exec produce.

“Snabba” is based on a novel by Jens Lapidus and was a major hit in its home country. The thriller followed three interconnected storylines involving drugs and organized crime, with the main character a young financial wizard (played in the original by half-American Joel Kinnaman, poised for an international break-out) who hopes to strike it rich quickly by becoming a runner for a coke dealer.

Many producers and companies were vying for remake rights to the movie, whose buzz began at the Berlin Film Festival. UTA and Magnolia Entertainment threw a reception for the movie’s filmmaker Daniel Espinosa at the Hammer Museum in late March and screened his movie.

From then, offers started to pour in like easy money (which is what "snabba cash" means in Swedish) from Universal, Summit, Paramount, Fox, the Weinstein Company, Mandate and Warners.

The deal, in the high six figures, has a progress to production, or “short fuse” clause, which means that if Warners sits on it for too long, the rights revert back to the producers.

Jon Berg is overseeing for Warners.

For Efron, repped by CAA and Alchemy Entertainment, “Snabba” represents the latest opportunity for the young actor to grow beyond the teen roles that made him a star. The project, the first acquisition for Efron’s shingle, also sends a signal as to the sort of high-level material with which Efron wants to be associated.

Tre Vanner Produktion, the banner behind “Snabba,” is repped by attorney Linda Lichter.
Efron, Warners, Atlas win bidding war for Swedish thriller (exclusive)

Quote:
Zac Efron will star in a remake of Swedish thriller "Snabba Cash" for Warner Bros. with Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven and Richard Suckle producing.
Efron's shingle, set up at Warner Bros. earlier this year, will also produce as will original producer Fredrik Wikstrom. Michael Hjorth will exec produce.

Warner's announced Wednesday it had won the bid for the remake rights. Interest in the project's been elevated thanks to the popularity of another Swedish crime thriller, Stieg Larsson's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Efron will portray a financial wizard who hopes to strike it rich quickly by creating money laundering schemes for a drug syndicate.

"Snabba Cash" -- translated as "easy money" -- was based on the 2006 Jens Lapidus novel of three interlocking stories about set in Stockholm about friends who become involved with drugs and organized crime. Swedish pic was directed by Daniel Espinosa with Joel Kinnaman portraying the lead as a taxi driver and cocaine runner.

Jon Berg is overseeing for Warner Bros. Project's the first acquisition for Efron's shingle.

WB deal that melds two projects: "Back To The Future-like film"
Quote:
Efron has made a separate deal at Warner Bros to star in a Back To The Future-like film that melds two projects. One’s a pitch from writers Tim Calpin and Kevin Jakubowski, and the other is a WB project called Algorithm that the studio was already developing. Nick Stoller, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall director who just wrapped Get Him To The Greek, will produce along with Mark Gordon and Bryan Zuriff. Alan Riche is exec producer along with Efron and Barrett.
EXCLUSIVE: Zac Efron Picks Two Projects – Deadline.com

Quote:
Though details are scarce, the film - which one would assume to be a time-travel movie - is a meld of two scripts, one by Tim Calpin and Kevin Jakubowski ("Assassination of a High School President"), and another that was titled "Algorithm" and had Nick Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) attached to direct.

Since the flick is set up at Warner Bros, and it's Universal that own the "Back to the Future" series, Efron's obvious had to go the 'homage' route rather than the 'remake' route.

Based on Efron's past comments ("Growing up, my favourite thing to do was to climb into the car and play Back To the Future. I would pretend I was Marty McFly" he said recently), don't be surprised if this one's as "Back to the Future" as an unofficial redo will allow.

You gotta wonder whether Efron went to Universal with the idea of remaking "Future" - or trying to talk them back into doing "Back to the Future 4" and "Back to the Future 5", as was the plan in the late 90s; Ed Solomon's two-parter would've fixed on Doc Brown inadvertently causing the UFO crash in Roswell, and a scientist (Sarah Michelle Gellar) having to help him 'set things right' - before taking his 'time-travel' idea to WB.

The untitled flick will be produced by TV vet Mark Gordon ("Grey's Anatomy") and Bryan Zuriff ("The Messenger"), and executive produced by Efron, Jason Barrett ("17 Again"), and Alan Riche (the upcoming "Teen Witch" remake).

Zac to star & exec produce spy thriller "Fire"
Quote:
Zac Efron to star in spy thriller from Marvel scribe Brian Michael Bendis
Universal is on “Fire.”

The studio has picked up the rights to the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis. Zac Efron is attached to star and will exec produce with his manager, Jason Barrett.

Neal Moritz is producing with David Engel of Circle of Confusion, the company that reps Bendis.

Written and drawn by Bendis before he went on to become one of Marvel Comics’ top writers, the story centers on a college student who is inducted into a special CIA project that tests whether training ordinary citizens to be agents can be successful.

The move puts Efron, who is also repped by CAA, and Bendis back with Universal. Efron is coming off of starring in the Burr Steers drama “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud,” while Bendis has an adaptation of his graphic novel “Jinx” set up at the studio.

Quote:
The list of young actors who transition to adult leading men isn’t that long... Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Christian Bale, etc. Zac Efron is hoping to make that transition so he’s linked himself to a pair of projects he hopes will give him the chance to broaden his range. One of them would be his first action turn, in a Ludlum-esque spy thriller. Efron has a just made a deal at Universal for Fire, an adaptation of a graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis that was published by Image Comics.

The plan is for Efron to play a college student who is recruited by the CIA, only to find that he has been trained for a program that creates expendable agents. Bendis, the fanboy favorite whose comic book creations include "Ultimate Spider-Man", will write the script. While little material moves during Sundance, Efron and Bendis got the deal after they schlepped around to three studios, pitching the project on a rainy day last Friday. The project has the steady hand of Neal Moritz, who’ll produce with Circle of Confusion’s David Engel. Efron and Alchemy Entertainment’s Jason Barrett will be exec producers.

Zac to star & executive produce in Mandate Thriller
Quote:
Zac Efron has signed to star in an untitled thriller for Mandate Pictures, which is being written by Leslie Dixon.

The plot is being kept under wraps but it is described as "a sexy thriller." The deal continues the evolution of Efron from the teen heartthrob of the "High School Musical" franchise to a more mature leading man, and also sees him stepping into producing shoes. He will act as executive producer with Mandate's Nathan Kahane.

Frequent Mandate collaborator Greg Shapiro of Kingsgate Films ("The Hurt Locker"), Jason Barrett, and Dixon will produce.

Nicole Brown will oversee the project for Mandate.

Efron and Dixon, a respected veteran writer whose credits include 1999's "The Thomas Crown Affair and "Freaky Friday," first worked together on "Hairspray."

No director is on board.

Efron, repped by CAA and Alchemy Entertainment, last starred in New Line's teen comedy "17 Again," which grossed almost $63 million domestically. Dixon is repped by CAA.

Johnny Quest rumors
Quote:
Now it looks like the rumors are true and that the plum role is going to Zac Efron, the 21-year-old pretty-boy star who is hoping the action role will help him dance away from youth-pop vehicles and whip up a career-redefining franchise in the Indiana Jones mode. (Dwayne Johnson is circling the project as well and would be the brawny version of pilot and man-of-action Race Bannon.)

The choice of Efron is going to stir up fans of the classic Quest series because, well, Jonny was just an 11-year-old in the prime-time cartoons of the 1960s that so deftly pulled on Milton Canniff, Ian Fleming and Rudyard Kipling for their spirit of exotic adventure. I myself think it's a surprising but interesting choice, and I'm one of the people in town who think Efron (like Justin Timberlake) has a big future ahead of him and that people will look back on his frothy Disney duty as just the early steps in the choreography of his career. Making Jonny older will change the property, to be sure, but maybe it will make it richer as well.

Thanks Connie for the new thread

When you open the news thread you need to go back to the old thread and copy each of the sections inside of quote boxes. It is a huge pain, I know, but it's just the way that this OP is formatted.
