Well, there were always major differences between books and show, bar for maybe Season 1, differences that kept growing afterwards. I'd say by Season 5/Book 5, it wasn't really the same thing.

8 books, same as seasons. Written through Dexter's inner voice in inimitable style, so much richer. I love them both, in different ways. I wish I could gush about it but I don't want to spoil you.

Partly what I love about them is that Jeff Lindsay could go darker than the show at places without having to worry about viewer discretion, and yet it's impossible not to root for Dexter from the perspective we're seeing it.

You might not find the first one very entertaining because you don't need the introduction to the characters, you know them well, and basically know what happens. But it's important to read the last few chapters cause that's where the differences start.
