Jared in 4.07 - "It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester" SPN Episode Discussion Thread

"It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester"
The CW, 9/8c
Thu, 30 Oct 2008

It's a few days before Halloween and Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate two mysterious deaths in a small town. The brothers find hex bags and deduce a witch is sacrificing people to summon a dangerous demon named Samhain.

Castiel (guest star Misha Collins) arrives in town and tells Sam and Dean the freeing of Samhain is one of the Seals that will lead to freeing Lucifer, so Castiel has brought a specialist angel named Uriel (guest star Robert Wisdom) to smite the entire town.

Charles Beeson directed the episode written by Julie Siege.

I'll include the trailer once I got home.

Castiel is a powerful presence, I agree with you. I hope they writers don't make Castiel overshadow Sam, especially now they're apparently on different sides.

OHHHHHHHHH CRAP.

Well, Sam is down the dark road and without Ruby's help. He's doubting his faith, possibly feeling betrayed and he is totally with his back agaisnt the wall.

I liked this episode. Not the best but still good. I hate Uriel though, Castiel is enough we don't need more of the angels going after Sam.
At first I didn't like Sam using his abilities but in this episode it was necessary and I'm glad he did. He would have died and so would have Dean and a lot of other people had he not used his powers. He did the right thing, and I still think that he will be able to control them. Dean looked so disappointed in him though and that is not what he needs right now. He needs the support of his brother telling him that he will be able to control his powers and not go over to the dark side especially right now with Uriel on his ass, he doesn't need anybody else doubting him he needs people on his team

Hehe, I liked Uriel as a character but hated the way he treated Sam. I felt so sad for Sam's faith taking a hard hit like that.

Yes, I agree. I think Sam had no choice but to use his powers in that case. Dean had a pretty nice comforting moment from Castiel, I do hope like you say that Dean or someone else can do the same for Sam who is in pretty bad shape right now.

But hardly anyone understands what's he's going through which is depressing.

I liked the episode, not one of the best, but still good.

I thought it was adorable that Sam was such a fanboy to meet an angel, but suddenly, I felt so bad for Sam when his faith took such a hard hit, he was crushed when he was faced with the fact that the angels weren't what he thought they were.

I also think it was necessary for Sam to use his powers at that point since he had no choice, he would have died, Dean would have too, and everyone else. It was so jarring to see Sam using his powers to full force, that his nose bled afterward. Combined that with Dean's disappointed face, I felt so bad for Sam, he needs someone to comfort him; to understand him.

Yep, I've downloaded it already. She has to watch Smallville first.

ETA: FINALLY!

As i was saying from the Sam Thread, Jared was amazing on the last episode. Sam is breaking my heart to bits. He tried so hard to obey his brother, he tried so hard to resist using his powers (even though he somehow believes it can work). What else could he have done? Try and wait for Dean and pray to God that he can save him on time? Or what? Sammy is again taking the beating because he used his power. But yeah, what else could they have done?

He acted on an impulse. He acted on what he thought was best AT THAT TIME. I hope Dean comforts him, because Sam is losing his faith. They boy is broken. He thinks he's a freak, he thinks he's useless. It can bring someone's faith in his own self down. What Dean could do right now is be a big brother and comfort his lil bro, not try to parent him.

I agree Fla. They boy tried. And he knows he did wrong for disobeying Dean, Dean doesn't need to remind him. I understand that Dean is scared on what Sam can do with that power. He's just afraid that he will lose Sammy. So let me ask this - if Dean was determine to help Sam (and convince Sam) on not using his power, then why didn't he help him kill Samhail when he saw Sam's nose already bleeding? I mean, the knife was there, he could've helped Sam right at that moment. But what did he do? He stared at him with a disappointing look? Dean, I expected more from you. You wanted Sam to do this and do that, but you gotta help your brother do it. Sam's nose is bleeding for crying out loud, and he's grabbing his head like he was in deep pain and Dean just STARED! Shocked?! Okay, maybe shocked/disappointed, but Dean and Sam have had much training when it comes to dealing with demons and stuff like those - they work as a team. He should've gotten the freaking knife and help his brother. If the demons sensed him, then maybe Sam can find another way. They are good as a team, they can do it even without Sammy using his power, though he needs Dean's help.

I did like the episode. Sam's disappointment with angels and God is heartbreaking. The boy believed in heaven for all his life and to finally meet them and find out that they are the angels of no mercy hit him hard. I love the scene in the car where Dean was trying to tell him not to lose faith. Jared was amazing! (Jensen is so beautiful )
