At the time we didnt knew how much pain he was really hiding...And I guess PD didnt know either but in that scene we can see how he said it with a bit of sadness...he is so good showing emotions in so subtle ways...

During most S1 he was cocky and charming and flirty but when Addison showed up it was almost a 180.

And then all through S2 he was so miserable...Now after so many seasons we got to realize that Derek's hiding his pain wasnt only about Addison...it was his father and probably Amelia too....yet he remained hopeful and optimistic...

I miss the brainman....
