Which always bothered me, because here he can see that Max is different, that she has all these emotions and layers, yet when it comes to Alec, he's very close minded.

Yeah I think that was the case too. Maybe if he took the time to understand Alec he would have seen what a great guy he was and know that Alec would never right out and steal Max from him.
