He really makes kids feel safe and protected. Of course, that's such an integral part of Dean's personality - he's a protector. And he actually talks to kids, explains things to them so they understand what's going on.

that's true, and I think he learned that skill early on when he was applying it to Sam; he's obviously very protective of Sam and I think Sam was such an inquisitive kid - so Dean probably learned to answer all the 'why' questions

Actually, Dean appears more likely to answer other kids' questions than he was to answer Sam's. At least as regards the supernatural. But then, Sammy was his little brother, and protecting him (even from the truth about what was out there in the dark) was something he'd try to do for as long as possible.

well, that's true, but I meant in general. I think Sam is such a curious kid about everything, not just about supernatural stuff; but I do agree he'd try to shield Sam from everything supernatural for as long as possible

Yeah, I imagine Dean got lots of "Why?" questions from little Sammy. (Not sure I see John taking time for long discussions answering things like why the sky is blue............... )

I agree, I think Dean would be the more indulgent one in answering Sam's questions, and Sam would probably badger him until he got an answer. I don't imagine John would actually answer the why questions, he'd probably get annoyed.

While I can totally see little Sammy trailing along behind Big Brother Dean, asking him every question that popped into his inquisitive little mind.

I can see that too! it's a very Sam like thing to do. Adding to the fact that he thinks the world of Dean to the mix, I'm sure he was pretty annoying.

I'm sure Sammy was sometimes annoying with his endless questions and trailing after Dean, but I have a feeling that Dean secretly loved all of it

Oh, definitely. Dean loves being the big brother (even if at times all that responsibility wore on him), and would have loved having his little brother come to him for answers about the world. He was probably a little sad when Sam entered his rebellious years and wasn't turning to him for all the answers.
