Music elitist, mainstream lover, etc?

Do you consider yourself a "music elitist"? Say, you just carefully choose what you listen too? Quality is very important, a genre doesn't matter much.
Or mainstream is something you don't like at all?
Maybe you are rather the type that just doesn't care, meaning you listen to whatever is on the radio or on the top ten list. And so forth...

How would you describe yourself?

I believe knowing someones taste in music is a good way to connect and find more about that someone.

Interesting topic...

I don't really consider myself a 'music elitist' or a 'mainstream lover'.

I'm not much for the radio because I have very little patience and hate commercials, and I also can't stand the repetition. I don't want to hear the same song eight times during a two hour period. I usually find my music through television shows or sometimes by reccomendation from someone who knows what I usually like.

That said, I don't reject something because it's mainstream. For me, it's all about whether or not I like the song/artist. If I like what I'm listening to, then that's all that matters. I've noticed I tend to lean more towards artists/bands who are a little more obsecure, but I can like mainstream as well.

I have a collection for changing moods, but I love music that inspires me. Like if I'm writing something, or being creative with something, listening to certain kinds of music helps me. I have specific CDs that I almost always listen to when I write, and then when I'm in the car, I have others that I consider my 'road music'.

This is going to sound big-headed...but I wish people would be more like me when it comes to music (see!),.

I hate when people who like non-mainstream stuff insult it, but at the same time it's kind of sucky to only like top 40 hits. You're closing yourself off to another world completely.

Me being someone who used to only listen to Spice Girls, now I listen to a whoooole bunch of (good) stuff. And I never realized how listening to so many different bands (given, I mainly stick to rock and "indie rock" and some hip-hop) as opposed to listening only to Ashlee Simpson, Simple Plan and Eminem for example can "expand" your mind.

Listening to that stuff can be fun for sure , and sure you can probably relate to the lyrics, but they're so general of course you could.

Try listening to stuff that is actually artistic. Stuff that doesn't sound like other stuff, or someone that sounds new. It makes everything else seem like a waste of time in the end.

My point is just enjoy it for what it is and don't worry about whatever category it was stuck under.

I applaud you MiniElky.

I listen to what I like, whether it be GC, Ani Difranco, Marilyn Manson, Duran Duran, Brand New, Bright Eyes, Carole King, MxPx,NOFX, The Beatles, or Ashlee Simpson.

I hate listening to the radio, mainly because it plays stuff I can't stand, but listen to what you want and forget whether it fits into a certain catergory.

Elitist? Sometimes sure, but mostly that's giving stick to my best friend for bands I love to mock, she knows I'm not serious. We practically have the same taste.
But when people go on an all out attack on people music taste I want to tell them to chill out. If someone wants to listen to a certain type of music, let them, it's only up to them what they listen to, chances are you'll just make them pissed or feel bad.

Meh. If I like a band, or a song, I'll listen to it.

For me quality is very important and a genre doesn't matter much. I listened to all kind of music starting with symphonic and ending with techno.
I own over 1,000 CDs (albums or singles) and over 20,000 mp3s.

And also as TheCheshireKitten said I love music that inspires me, listening to certain kinds of music helps me.

Basically, if I like a song or a band I'll listen. If I don't, then I won't.

I couldn't care less about what the genre, unless it's metal because that's the only type of music I can't stand. Other than that, I listen to everything. And I really do mean EVERYTHING. I never limit myself when it comes to music.

I'm a music snob leaning toward the alternative and the indie. I hate it when bands I like become too famous and suddenly all the teeny boppers are on the bandwagon, even though they'd never heard of the band before [insert breakout single here]. I love it the most when a band/artist has a very small, rabid group of followers, because it almost seems you're in a secret club. You'd be walking down the street wearing a Mars Volta T-shirt or whatever, and someone would smile at you, and you know that's what they're smiling at. I think that's awesome, even though it's a bit shallow. I don't go around dissing people who like mainstream, top 40 stuff, but I tend to judge the people I meet on their music taste.

Same here. I listen to everything. I'm very eclectic when it comes to music, or anything in general. I think it's important to broaden your musical preferences. There's so much to learn and understand. Music is an outlet to all of that.
