Half Nelson: Ryan Gosling gives an astonishing performance as a young, idealistic and deeply flawed inner-city teacher. Nagging question: Can a low-budget indie get noticed? The misleading title won't help. AUG. 11

Me, too! Question: On August 11th, are they going to wide release it or just release it in certain states?

Probably in certain states/cities, since it's a small movie with independent roots.

Then, if it finds success on a limited number of screens, they'll start putting it in more theatres.

Probably in the bigger cities, since ThinkFilm's press releases have indicated there will be an international release of some kind.

Do you normally get independent films where you're at, Lina?

You might get this then, if it hits in smaller release.

And hopefully it hits in smaller release, obviously.

Yeah. I live in the NYC area.

Stuff about the Half Nelson soundtrack:

Quote:
Mark Ronson and Rich Kleiman stay on the grind. These native New
Yorkers are ingrained with the kind of talent and ambition that grows from
the pavement and graduates to the boardroom. With their production company,
Allido Records, expanding at a rapid pace, they're putting both the streets
and the office suites on blast.
These two have the hustle to make things happen. After securing a
joint- venture deal with Clive Davis' J Records for Chicago-based rapper
and Grammy winner Rhymefest, Allido is set to release his much buzzed-about
debut, Blue Collar, this summer. Ronson and Kleiman are also closing their
deal for Australian-born singer Daniel Merriweather, whose soulful pipes
have already drawn comparisons to D'Angelo and Prince and will be producing
the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed film "Half Nelson" starring Ryan
Gosling, which received rave reviews at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. In
addition, Allido manages Mark Ronson's ever-expanding DJ and producer
careers, as well as go-to downtown tastemaker DJ Jus SKE (Pharrell

The reliably mesmerizing Ryan Gosling stars in another young man's tale, "Half Nelson," from director Ryan Fleck. Gosling plays Dan, a high school history teacher and basketball coach who hides his crippling drug addiction with increasing futility. The film also boasts fine performances from deadpan young actor Shareeka Epps (as Drey, one of Dan's students) and Anthony Mackie (as the neighborhood drug kingpin who's trying to lure Drey into his employ).

9. "Half Nelson" — Ryan Gosling plays a white Brooklyn middle-school teacher who forges an unusual but tender relationship with an African American student when they find common ground. Teach has a drug problem and the student comes from a family torn up by drug dealing. A critical hit at this year's Sundance.

Can't Miss Films

From Uma Thurman as a jilted superheroine to Ryan Gosling as a teacher with a crack habit, what follows are some forthcoming releases that aim to keep comedy and drama clicking on a human scale during what's sure to be a long, hot, and often bombastic summer.

Half Nelson
Ryan Gosling has proven he can excel when playing everything from a Jewish neo-Nazi (in 2002's The Believer) and a teenage thrill-killer (Murder by Numbers, also 2002) to a working-class romantic hero (in 2004's The Notebook). In Half Nelson (Aug. 11), he plays a junior high school teacher in an African-American neighborhood who bonds with one of his students (Shareeka Epps) after she discovers that he's a crack addict. A first feature from director Ryan Fleck and his co-writer, Anna Boden, this may be one of those Sundance hits that resonates well beyond Park City.
