THE STORY SO FAR…

“Hi, I’m Maya. You’re really cute. We should hang out sometime. You make me happy. You don’t pay enough attention to me. This isn’t working out. It’s you, not me. We can still be friends, not really.” – Maya (x)

It started one morning on the way to school. Maya Hart saw the boy there on his own, and with a smile approached the unsuspecting Lucas Friar, who could do little more than to look back with a smile before being left there befuddled when she walked away. Their story might have ended then and there, if not for one piece of information which had yet to be revealed: Lucas would be joining the student body of John Q. Adams Middle School that very day. Soon, the game would begin.

“You’re not playing this right.” – Maya
“Oh, well that’s certainly not my intention. I’ll try harder next time.” – Lucas
“I will break you.” – Maya
“Well, if that’s what makes you happy, then. I certainly can’t wait for it, ma’am.” – Lucas (x)

“The hat’s just for me, isn’t it? You actually put thought into our little game, don’t you?” – Maya
“I actually do.” – Lucas (x)

Maya was a force in the world of their school. She had grown accustomed to a certain response to her actions. But the new boy wasn’t frazzled, not even a little. He would face her taunts with a smile and a tilt of his imaginary hat. Not one of her volleys hit home which only made her more determined. And as much as she tried, Lucas was as invested as she was, playing along, watching with great amusement as she found herself defeated again and again, knowing and perhaps hoping that it would only be one moment of respite before the next one of them took their turn.

“Hello, I’m Bucky McBoing-Boing. I got a great grandson who’s a Ranger Rick, and a Hopalong, and a Sundance, too. Everybody!” – Maya (x)

“I come from a long line of Clutterbuckets.” – Maya
“Oh, this is the greatest day of my life!” – Lucas (x)

“Have you ever heard me talk?” – Lucas
“Ha-hurr!” – Maya
“Wow!” – Lucas (x)

Beyond the game that threaded their days, their bond as friends grew. For however much she may have spent her days trying to get a rise out of him, calling him any one of her many nicknames for him, Lucas showed a protective side toward Maya, and she for him.

“Look at that lady, why can you only see half of her?” – Farkle (x)

“These people all had something to say.” – Maya
“Well, you only know that because they went ahead and said it.” – Lucas (x)

“Am I there yet?” – Maya (x)

“No! That’s what he wants. He wants you to be like him.” – Maya (x)

“You want to see a rope trick?” – Lucas (x)

They left behind the seventh grade and entered the eighth, where much as their tale had been laying down its foundation, it now soared higher than ever expected. The new boy had secrets, left back in Texas, as far as he’d hoped. When those secrets were revealed, showing his darker past, Maya found in him someone not as different from her as she might have once believed, and maybe for that their relationship began to change, to one of quiet understanding, while being as playful as ever.

“She called me Huckleberry.” – Lucas
“There’s also the possibility I may have called him Ranger Rick once.” – Maya
“Once?” – Lucas
“Oh yeah, Ranger Roy once. Ranger Rick is every day.” – Maya
“Don’t forget about Bucky McBoing-Boing.” – Lucas
“Oh, that was a fun day.” – Maya (x)

“You questioning my leadership, Hopalong?” – Maya
“Okay, these names you’re calling me are killing my street cred.” – Lucas
“Aw. Then what would you like me to call you?” – Maya
“I’d like you to call me Mad Dog.” – Lucas (x)

As close as they may have been growing toward one another, neither seemed all too aware of it. And then came the yearbooks.

“Hey, Maya, Lucas. Congratulations on winning favorite couple.” – Yindra (x)

All of a sudden, what had been in great part concentrated around a game between new friends seemed to be confronting each of them with a turn that revealed what others had already seen, more and more every day.

“I hate to break it to you, cowboy, but you’re still dancing with me.” – Maya (x)

“Well, I don’t want that for Maya. I want Maya to be happy.” – Lucas
“Hey, Maya, it looks like Lucas here’s getting’ all fired up on your behalf.” – Zay
“Thank you, Lucas. But it’s just an art class.” – Maya
“I feel bad. They’re taking away something you’re very good at.” – Lucas
“You’ve never said that to me before.” – Maya
“I’ve said it.” – Lucas
“Yeah, but not like straight to my face when you were looking at me. I can’t remember you actually…” – Maya
“You’re a great artist, Maya.” – Lucas (x)

“Why are you my second, Huckleberry? Shouldn’t you be over there with Riley?” – Maya
“Well, it was decided that if things get out of hand, I was the best choice to… contain you.” – Lucas
“Oh, you think you can?” – Maya
“Yeah, but I’ll probably pay for it pretty good.” – Lucas (x)

And then, Texas happened. Maybe it was being taken out of their usual space, but all that had been silently simmering along now came to a boil. And neither one of them knew how to deal with it.

“Quit looking at us, Huckleberry.” – Maya
“I’m sorry, Maya. You look good.” – Lucas
“Oh, thanks.” – Maya (x)

“I don’t want you going anywhere near that bull.” – Maya
“Yeah, that makes two of us.” – Lucas
“I want you to take off that stupid outfit, and I wanna get outta here.” – Maya
“Maya…” – Lucas
“I saw the bull. I don’t think the bull knows this is supposed to be fun.” – Maya (x)

“Lucas, look at me. If you do this, I will never speak to you again.” – Maya (x)

“You could have gotten hurt on that stupid bull. What do you think you getting hurt would have done to the people who…” – Maya (x)

Left to the two of them, with a half-made revelation in the air, Lucas and Maya sat around a campfire…

Returned home to New York, much as they might have liked for everything to be as it had been before, it simply could not. There was something hanging over their heads now, swinging perilously to wedge itself between them at any and all times. An attempt at a date quickly floundered, and an air of discomfort settled in more and more. Whether or not they meant for anyone to get hurt, which they did not, they knew someone would, and whatever they might have felt was forced to remain under wraps, though it did not prevent their bond from carrying on.

“Look, don’t expect it to be big, loud and obvious. For me, most of what I believe, comes to me when it’s quiet.” – Lucas
“Yeah? I don’t get a lot of quiet. What do you do?” – Maya
“I don’t know. You just… you just listen.” – Lucas (x)

“Hey, Lucas?” – Maya
“Yeah?” – Lucas
“Have I ever said anything nice to you?” – Maya
“No.” – Lucas
“Well… It’s one minute to midnight, and I’m glad you’re standing here.” – Maya
“Well, that kinda makes up for everything.” – Lucas (x)

Little as they wanted to be caught in between with a triangle, they couldn’t escape the facts, as they left middle school.

“You?” – Lucas
“There was this campfire, you see. You and me, I was in a far away place. There was a million stars in the sky… What do you think?” – Maya (x)

“Still like him?” – Maya
“Yeah. You?” – Riley
“Yeah. Still like us?” – Maya
“Yeah.” – Lucas (x)

So began high school, leaving John Q. or Abigail Adams High, and a brand new, confusing world for them to sort out an impossible situation. In between trying to discover who they were and who they were not, what came to stand out was that a choice needed to be made. And when that choice would get made, for better or for worse, the most important part for both of them was the other, that they would not hurt one another in the process, because when it came down to it, they were friends, and that wouldn’t change.

“Her name is Maya.” – Lucas (x)

“Don’t look at me.” – Lucas
“I’ll look at you whenever I wanna look at you, Huckleberry.” – Maya (x)

“Did you make a decision about us, Ranger Rick?” – Maya
“I did.” – Lucas (x)

“Maya, I’ve been down this road. Forget it. I missed a whole year of school because I thought I had to be something. That doesn’t get you anywhere.” – Lucas (x)

“And deep down, Maya is beautiful.” – Lucas (x)

“Look, I know you lose your mind over me in front of the fire light, but is it cool if I sit down?” – Maya
“You can take your chances.” – Lucas (x)

“You can’t hurt me, can you?” – Maya
“I could never hurt you.” – Lucas (x)
