Mel, in response to something you said at the end of the last thread-- I've often found myself preferring the possibilites of UC ships to the canon ones. Although I suppose it's more 50/50-- I liked CC with Dawson's Creek and Gilmore Girls, but with Grey's and Roswell I am finding myself quite UC (although based on what we've gotten for the first three seasons with Grey's, I kind of have a feeling that by the time the series ends very few couples will qualify as UC

). Also, I agree with your feeling that the writers seem to be multi-shippers, I just don't think they really are when it comes to MerDer (hence why they didn't seem to be big on Mer/Finn, and why they always felt the need to justify Addek happening on the grounds that they are obligated to each other by marriage-- which was obviously true, but did you really think that was going to last? With MerDer moments in literally every freaking episode? I really think they have a moment at least in every episode because I went to watch one the other day and I wanted to find an ep with no MerDer and I couldn't... we get breaks from the other couples, not from this one. That's why part of me thinks it's futile to ship Meredith with anyone else, though I can't help myself from indulging in fics that pair her with literally ANYONE but Derek). I just want a change for her, for a little while at least. And I would be interested in seeing Derek with someone else, but not as much as Mer. And as I've said many a time, Alex is the best option for her as far as I can tell. Both the best for her and him, and the most likely to be accepted by the fans.

My favorite Mer ship has always been Mer/Finn (and probably always will be). I like all of Alex's ships, but I can't say I love any of them. But outside of that I always thought she and Alex were the most suited to each other.

Great ship name, btw. It fits them perfectly.

Well, Mer/Der is the main ship couple, so it's only natural for them to have at least one scene together

. So I can understand that. I can only recall one show that didn't always have scenes together of the main couple, and that was Smallville lol

I shipped Michael/Liz mainly... which means I have to say, if you read fanfic, you should read the Polar Novel. Even if you don't dig Mi/L, it's just an amazing fic. Hell, my most highly recommded Grey's fic is a totally random pairing-- Meredith/Addison-- so you never know where the best writers will be.

But I wasn't against Mer/Finn, I don't feel like the writers bother developing him enough to really get the ship much of a fanbase. He was just used as an obstacle to MerDer and not as a real contender, which he should've been simply because it makes for more interesting TV. Where's the fun if you have to watch it already knowing she would choose Derek? For those who were MerDer, you love it when you're couple gets back together, but it would've been all the more exciting if you really didn't know if they would. The writers didn't even try to make it remotely believable that they wouldn't get back together. Which is why if Alex ever happens, I'd want the writers to give them a real chance, and not just make it another MerDer roadblock, which it seems almost everything that happens to either Mer or Der always ends up being. I don't like the fact that their lives seem to revolve around nothing but each other. That's not love, it's obsession. They can love each other, and have separate lives. I don't know why the writers won't allow for that to happen.

I feel like Mer/Alex would be such a natural couple that they'd have a much easier time writing them stories, having drama--but nothing too intense-- and plenty of fun stuff too. Burke/Cristina is an example of a couple where the storylines developed very naturally out of the characters being the types of people that they were. I think Mer/Alex would be like that. Everything would flow, it would feel natural. It wouldn't be as forced as MerDer have become, particularly this last season, IMO. And most importlantly, it's not like it would demean the MerDer relationship at all to have them break up and move on (at least for awhile). That's what happens in real life all the time.
