I found a fic where Mer is assaulted and she hides what happened and Derek (they are married) thinks she cheated. Alex is there, the guy who had assaulted her planted her stuff in an on-call room and alex found it, and says "If you need to talk I'm here, I won't judge you." the writer was spot on with their relationship.

I was just thinking that, too. Thatcher left Meredith behind and started a new family. Alex's dad left Alex and started a new family. The only difference is Thatcher learned from his mistakes the first time around and did better. Alex's dad screwed up all over again. I hope there's a moment later in the season where Meredith and Alex talk. Meredith would know exactly what to say to Alex without overstepping boundaries.

That's what I thought too. I wonder if she regrets reconnecting with her father, all things considered. There is the argument to be made for "wondering for the rest of your life".
