I'm not a shipper, but I really think this couple could work. I believe with all my heart that Andrew DeLuca was adopted, his biological parents are two characters we already know; this makes a strong common ground for Maggie and Andrew. I want the writers to do this.

Giacomo Gianniotti: I found out about a month ago. Before the holidays they told me! I couldn’t tell anybody. I was holding on to this secret that I was so excited and proud of.

DID YOU GET TO TELL YOUR FAMILY AT LEAST?

Of course. I told my family and I told them that if they ever spoke about it, I’d have to kill them. Because that’s what Shonda said. [Laughs]

SPEAKING OF SECRECY, WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT WHAT’S NEXT FOR DR. ANDREW DELUCA?

They placed me with Kelly McCreary’s character, who plays [Dr.] Maggie Pierce. The romance has been going well thus far, so I think you can expect that it will be put to the test.

As we get closer, feelings are involved and things get complicated. Seeing someone you work with is difficult because how secretive about it are we? If we’re telling people, do we tell select people, or do we just tell everyone we’re dating? And what does that do? Because there’s a certain judgment that can come along with that.

With [my character] being a young doctor, people can think [he’s] been trying to sleep his way to the top and get into surgeries. And then for her, it’s like she’s dating a lesser and using her power as an attending to sleep with a younger guy. As we move forward, it becomes more and more difficult to balance the relationship with the work.

This couple is a lot newer than the rest, and they’re not even officially labeled. However, we’re totally loving their chemistry. In fact, we wish that we got to see more of them and can’t wait to see what happens in the future. Although they both seem content with hiding their hookups, we think they could work in the long run as something more serious!
