Be honest, they never officially came out as a couple.
They were spotted a lot together and people assumed it and than Chad confirmed they were together by saying that Sophia has James now......... when talking about how him and Sophia moved on... and I felt Chad should've kept that to himself...

And it seems they just worked better as friends which is why they went back to friends but nothing was ever official... we just know they were best friends during like the first 5 seasons and after the show they remained very close.

So it's obviously clear to suspect that probably romance didn't work for them and they decided to keep their friendship instead.
