Christmas is about presents.

Well that's what it seems like. Christmas isn't really about the birth of Jesus anymore (except for maybe the Christians). Its all about materialism, the Madison Avenue advertisments are set out to make people to make you look like a jerk for not buying someone you barely know a present or not buying really expensive gifts. Note this is just my opinion and nobody has to agree with me.

Plus I would like to hear other peoples opinions about Christmas.

I agree it just gets more expensive every year, it's sad the amount of people that go into debt because of it

Yesterday...

Linda: We may have spent a lot of money, but it's only once a year.
My dad: Yeah, but we spend the whole next year paying for it!

I can't help feeling guilty that I didn't purchase as much as everyone else in the house did. Even though I know no one will care, I still feel bad and I feel like they're going to notice that I only got about 3 things for each of them while I know they did more. I probably shouldn't feel like that- I got what I could, and it's the thought that counts. I wouldn't care how much I received because it isn't about that.... but still, these days, that does seem lost sight of.

In the newspaper yesterday I was looking at the section of the local kids (Kindergarten-2nd) letters to Santa, because they always put them in the paper. Some of these kids go on and on about all the stuff they want (and I'm still wondering what a 'cane ape rake' is on a list), and then you run across one that says she wants "a family and some new clothes" and one that wants a bed for his mom. I noticed yesterday that the Angel Tree at Walmart is almost still full of names. I hate that we live in a world where people as a whole are so concerned about themselves that we don't take time for others.

Just ain't what it used to be.

I don't feel guilty about spending a lot of money and I espicially don't feel guilty about other people spending money on me.

My family are prodominately atheists so religon does not come into it at all.

To me, Christmas is always prodominately about family and food. It's about showing your love and warmth for each other, letting loose and remembering that life can be lovely. It's the day where you can forget about work, put you worries on the backburner and eat and drink whatever the hell you want.

...basically, it's the one day of the year when everybody is in a hell of a good mood and it's perfectly acceptable to eat chocolate for breakfast.

I find that sad. Although the wishing tree i saw at K-mart yesterday actually had a lot of presents under it. Every year i go and select a kid to give to, I thinks its just a nice thing to do in the spirit of xmas.

I spent close to $250 this year on xmas, a week's worth of wages, and considering there is only 3 people in my family, its a lot of money. But i guess Xmas only comes around once a year, and i got some pretty good presents for my family. They better enjoy them now

Thank god we don't celebrate Christmas, because we arent Christian and most of my friends aren't either so we usually get togther on Christmas and be silly instead of being washed up with all that materialistic stuff. It's the one day I feel good, because I feel like I have spent the least amount of money and that doesn't happen often.

We also spend our time doing charity work and I only buy presents for less fortunate kids. We have this thing here where we can put presents under the tree at Kmart for kids that don't get to celebrate a real Christmas and soup van stuff. It feels nice.

agreed. this year i'm not really feeling the whole spirit of christmas thing. just find it too..stressful. i didn't buy presents for anyone except my mom (and that was my sister's idea). i just couldn't be bothered. besides i have no money. christmas shouldn't be about presents. and if it is, then it should be about giving, not expecting in return.

it's sad.

I dont believe in God or Jesus, but any excuse to get the family together (who probably don't see each other otherwise) and have a good time is OK by me.
Yes Christmas is expensive, if you want it to be. But to the people who moan about it being materialistic (which is very true) you can not deny that the rest of the year is, aswell.

I think it's sad how people can end in so much debt over christmas and the stress in causes when it is supposed to be a time of celebration.

Whether people are christian or not, I see christmas as a time to get together and spend time with your friends and family and be happy and silly.

The meaning of christmas should be about love and for me I have to admit some presents .

Oh and I love your av Jen !

That's exactly how I feel about Christmas. I'm not a Christian, so religion really plays no part in my celebration. Christmas, to me, has always been about spending time with family, eating good food, festive decorating, and presents. Honestly, I enjoy buying presents for family and friends, moreso than receiving them.

Re: Salvation Army Angel Tree
I always try to get at least one angel a year, sometimes more depending upon my financial status that year. This year, I could only get one but had a fantastic time buying her all kinds of gifts. My school has a similar angel type charity for a local shelter. My students did a terrific job at buying loads and loads of gifts for our assigned family. Food was very low, though, so I spent about $100 on groceries for the families.

Speaking of chocolate for breakfast, my mother makes killer chocolate gravy every Christmas morning. That's the only time of the year that I get it, so I make sure to be at their house for breakfast.

It's delicious. I suppose the 'gravy' part of the description sounds nasty...it's a southern thing. Other people may simply call it a sauce. It's just a mixture of cocoa, sugar, butter, and milk(? I think). Very tasty over biscuits.

Yea I know what you mean about how Christmas is starting to become the celebration of receiving presents. It pisses me off at how much more stuff has Santa on it than Christ though. How did Santa become *so* important? He's a fat guy in a red suit who gets the credit for giving you a couple of gifts.
