Welcome to FF!

I think your question would be better received at the OffTopic board.

after all that moving, an answer:

I think it is good. Why? It allows people with transportation issues to still get a degree. It allows single parents the chance to get a degree. It allows those with busy careers to continue their education.

It is NOT good for me, because I just can't learn that way. I'm not motivated enough to sit here at home and do that sort of thing. I'd be playing WOW, or hitting some movie sites or even popping in a movie. I need structure. I need a physical person to instruct and such.

I am currently taking online courses through the university I go to along with classes that I must physically attend.

Internet based learning is great because you can do it at your own pace. In my second year, I only had one class in the university to go to and the rest was online - this was great because my dad became disabled and with my mom working, he needed someone to drive him places.

So internet based learning helps you in a lot of ways, however, it may not work for a lot of people. It depends on what you're learning. I took Biology online.. I failed the first time I took it then got a D the next time. I am horrible in science and prefer going to an actual biology class.

It depends on your lifestyle. For me, I love online courses. After being at work all day, I do not want to go sit in class for two hours. By the end of the day, I am tired, and I'm not at my best then.

I think it's good for people who don't live within driving distance of a college/university. At my college, I know a girl who commutes three hours to get to class. Not everyone can do that, so online classes can help in that situation.

I also believe that if you take online courses, you really have to be a dedicated student. I have the tendency to slack off a bit when I take online classes. You really have to be able to keep up with it.

Online classes do have their disadvantages. The live discussion/debate is missing. Sometimes it may take a day or two for your professor to get back to you.

It really depends on how motivated you are and what kind of learner you are. If you're motivated you can learn from any source, but sometimes people learn one way and not another. I know I cannot sit at home and learn, I need to hear things, see things, I need to be away from the computer.

I teach online courses and I have to say that it's not for everyone. Because it requires so much discipline I have had to "suggest" to some students, in the past, that perhaps they'd do better with an in-class program.

However, that being said, I find that online courses are great as they allow for the freedom of setting a schedule based on individual needs. I, myself, have taken online courses before and have enjoyed them.

I think online classes are great if you are disciplined enough to stay on top of them. If you are then go for it! I love them because they allow me to work at my own pace. But a disadvantage is that there are times where you may not feel as though you have enough direction, and sometimes it can be harder to communicate if your professor.

But I have been taking online courses since my freshman year of college, and I love them!

I think that online learning is good if you have to discipline.

At my University I take both online courses and in-class courses. With my online courses, the class does meet one to four times a month in an audio-conference. If you are near a meeting point you can go and meet other people in the course along with the professor. We also utilize something called WebCT which has chat rooms, discussion boards, email, and other tools so that you never feel left out.

I think that it also depends on the course and the professor to determine whether the learning experience will be positive. In my European History course my professor has recorded lectures that can be downloaded to an iPod along with a reading and assignment for the week. I think that is really great. In another class I write journal entries, and in another, a majority of my mark is based on exams.

Online courses, like most other folks have already said, are excellent classes for students who are responsible or have self-discipline

It's also a great way to get all students involved in a discussion.

I've never taken an online class before, but I think I'd prefer to sit in a lecture course cuz it's more personal and I think it may be easier to talk to the professor or teacher's aide if you're in a lecture hall vs. sitting in front of a computer screen.
