AOL is fraud! I can't believe this!

This company is unbelievable. Last summer I did one of those free trials to see if their dial-up service was any quicker than Earthlink. It wasn't and the AOL interface was horrible and slowed the computer to a crawl. Well I tried to cancel once but you know how those agents are, so I ended up getting a free month and forgot to cancel. Got charged $23.95 which sucked, but oh well, my fault. I called and finally cancelled (after much hassle) in October.

Well today I check my credit card balance online and see a $1.00 charge from who? None other than "TWX*AOL." Well I immediately called the phone number next to it. It turns out that my account, which I cancelled on October 3rd, 2004, had been reinstated on June 1, 2005 by an "outbound telemarketer." The deal was $1 for 3 months, then $23.95 a month after that. No telemarketer ever called me (I worked ALL DAY that day!) and even if they did I would have NEVER EVER agreed. Why? BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER AT HOME RIGHT NOW! So WHY WOULD I PURCHASE INTERNET SERVICE IF I HAVE NO COMPUTER TO USE IT ON?!

It also bugs me that AOL has held on to my account information, INCLUDING MY CREDIT CARD, for 8 months! When I cancelled my account I assumed that all my information was deleted. I do not like the idea of them holding on to my info.

This company needs to be investigated for fraud because something is not right. Unless I somehow had my memory erased, there is 100%, no way that I re-instated that account, unless AOL does some telephone-hynosis to make you forget (which wouldn't surprise me!) I'm not taking any chances and am reporting my credit card stolen, just so I can get a new number.

I don't blame you. I had a difficult time in the past cancelling AOL accounts.

ETA: By the way I snagged a WP from your site.

AOL is garbage. Those free cd's they send out can be used as coasters and not much else.

I agree. I have a free trial of it now and it pisses me off sooo much.

You should contact your credit card company and tell them your situation.

A friend of mine had a similar problem reciently. She had AOL Broadband and then she moved, and the town she moved to couldn't offer broadband service. So she cancled her subscription to AOL. Five months later AOL was still charging her credit card. She was on the phone everyday with AOL and they would tell her that they stoped and returned the money to her credit card, and the credit card company claimed that they were never given any money from AOL. My friend kept calling AOL, and by this time she was out something like $200. At this point AOL is saying that they can only go back 3 months and would only give her about $70. She ended up getting in touch with a reporter from Money magizine I believe it was and the reporter got in touch with AOL. The next day some high level exec calls my firend and agrees to give her all of her money back. It's really sad that media had to get involved for AOL to fix their mistake. As far as I know the reporter plans to write a whole piece on this and it should be published in the next month or two.

phone/internet companies are rip offs...

My old internet company jacked up the broadband prices, and didnt even bother to tell me, just charged me extra on my credit card.

And the phone company i was with, were charging us for our own phone number which has a prefix of (08) _____ AND the phone number with the prefix (02)________ We live in Western Australia, and they were charging us for the phone number in Sydney, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STUPID COUNTRY! took 4 months for them to finally do something, everytime we would ring up they would be like "what is your number" and we would tell them, and they would be like "thats correct" uhh, no its not dumbass, i dont live in Sydney, some dude in sydney for about $200 free calls...

AOL is evil, seriously. I had them for 6 years before we finally got someone else. They really do try to suck you in...You call to cancel, and they keep giving you free months until you decide you want to keep them. Well, "free"...but they always seem to find at least something to charge you for.

AOL is evil, but another option for those free CDs (as great as coasters are and all...) frisbees!

I can honestly say that I have never heard a single good thing about AOL.

Well, I actually like AOL. I've used it ever since...6th grade, I guess. And I'm graduating high school now so that's a while. I use IE more now, but I still like using AOL for mail and stuff.

Then again, I've never tried cancelling it, so I can only imagine what a pain in the ass that must be.
