At first I was a bit thrown off simply because it's not like they shared very many "positive" scenes together on OTH, but afterwards, it made sense.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree w/ you plus I was surprise that they are close when everyone knew that he has the crush on Joy, but I don't think that he never make the move on her since I felt like he rather to have her as close friends than lose her if they date.. Not sure if that made sense..
