It would have affected all of the Scott family in different ways had he not died. Because i feel like Keith dying changed the way the characters were slightly throughout the entire series.

It would have been interesting if they did some sort of alternate universe type thing for Dan's storylline, surrounding his relationships with everyone in his family...
