David in 1987 wanted to have a film career, and I'm sure it would be mortifying for him if he got stuck for 8 years in a family sitcom show on TV. And then he wouldn't have been able to be Mulder for X-Files which ended up like being better than any movie for pop culture and fame.

And this whole thread is really something lol. Apparently Gillian was remembering it as part of the episode, and then get really embarrassed when David reminded her that that actually happened in the trailer when they were off set
