I thought it was done so that the star player had a hot cheerleader girlfriend. It's actually no more complex than that. How utterly shallow.

And the shallowness would be so much more bearable if the show didn’t go out of its way to preach and pretend it’s deep. For example, I find Gossip Girl much more boring and annoying than oth, but I respect it more for its lack of delusions about what it is.

I've never watched Gossip Girl but that is definitely one of things I hated about OTH.

I'd recommend you never do, lol. That Royals thing Mark is writing seems Gossip-Girl-like, so I hope he hasn't brought his pretentiousness to that. Haven't watched any of it nor do I intend to though. I dislike both Mark's writing and the monarchy,so it would be self-inflicted toruture.

GG is trash. At some point I was unable to buy Chuck and Blair so I had to tune out. It was so badly done and the chemistry was so dry. Then Dan and Blair happened and I turned in, til they messed it up and went back to Chuck and Blair. Though that show made it clear it was generic trash and did not deceive us with any underlying messages about what is right and good about the world, like OTH does.

The CB stuff was so bad. Honestly, Chuck was irredeemable from the get go, given he tried to rape two girls in the pilot. But I really loved the way Ed portrayed him, so I was ready to pretend that didn’t happen and enjoy his character once he got more positive development. But an overkill of Chuck-does-unforgivable-things soon came again. The first time I thought they just miscalculated, because they didn’t intend him as more than an antagonist and then changed their minds. The second time it was just gross. But yeah, on the whole, GG at least owned its trashiness.

Gazillion times worse. Other than the attempted rapes, he smashed glass in anger near Blair (his canonical tru wuv), which ended up cutting her face. He also had some brothel-owning thing going on. He was an overt, violent misogynist.

I get the urge to like him and excuse him because imo the actor who portrays him makes him so charismatic. But his super defensive fans who actually excuse away multitude of atrocious things he’s done are a bit too much. I’ve even seen internet essays about how he’s a feminist character and that’s just all sorts of sad.

Ppl get a bit carried away with defending their enjoyment of something. Years on tumblr have exposed me to a number of scary think pieces along the lines of how politically subversive Disney movies are or what not; ppl there reach a lot, lol. But with Chuck-like characters, it’s a bit concerning given excuse of men like him is common in real life too. Not that I think all his overly defensive fans would use the same logic in real life.
