-I laughed so hard when Ferguson called Ben "Dhali Lama with a gun"

-Wow, what tension between Ben and Cooper! Ben's face showed a mixture of hurt, sadness, and disappointment. Sammy was funny though. "I almost teared up watching that reunion."

-Lydia's storyline was sad, but Regina King is an amazinig actress.

-LOVED when Ben was helping that guy who was bleeding out. It really shows a lot about who he is as a person.

-Love the tension in the lockeroom.

I can't believe Ferguson slammed Ben against a mirror and broke it!

-During the shoot out at the police station, I loved how Ben had Sammy's back. "Hey Bryant, Bryant are you alright?" And when they were outside and Sammy was puking, he again asked him if he's okay and Sammy asked him if he's okay. Then Sammy confesses that he pissed his pants, and Ben admits that he did too.

-The tape with Tang is heartbreaking.

-"I guess she finally got to see the ocean."

Poor Lydia.

-As for the shallow... Ben's hair was AWESOME and he looked good, though I could see some bags under his eyes in some scenes. He looks fairly thin to me. I think he's lost weight. Sammy actually looked good without his shirt on. I admit I'm not a fan of Cooper's body though.

So those are my thoughts.

I did enjoy the first episode of Southland. Though it is a lot different then what I had anticipated. The show is a lot more documentary like. It's kind of like watching cops but more dramatic and more in depth into each cops life. It's a lot grungier then I though it would be (I hope that makes sense). None of this things are bad by any means, I just didn't expect it to be this....HBO'ish. Theres a lot that I need to catch up on, a lot I didn't get. Being that this is my first season watching I guess that would be expected. I'm not sure how I feel about Ben Sherman just yet, but I am def intrigued and can't wait until the next episode.

I love Ben's sense of humor though. I also love how he seems so passionate about his job. He seems like he has a really good heart...good morals.

It makes plenty of sense, and you are completely right. It's also kind of like a cross between The Wire, The Shield, and Adam's 12 but with its own flare to it. What I've noticed with Southland is, people either love it or don't care for it. The people who love it are all diehard, loyal fans and there are probably about 3 million of them. But yeah, the actual cases on the show are random and documentary like, but the characters are very complex and fleshed out and they each have an in depth personal story that goes back to the first episode of the series. The storyline for each individual cop builds on itself with each episode.

I'm so glad it's HBO'ish. It screams out "Adults Only!" when you watch the show. I love that. It's such an adult show and a far cry from The OC, which even though I love - is for teenagers mostly. Sherman does have a great sense of humor, and he's definitately passionate about his job with decent morals (in terms of trying to help people) and a good heart. He is also extremely flawed: sleeping around, drinking, lying sometimes, sometimes crossing the line at work and doing things he isn't supposed to do, and also he is a bit cocky and hotheaded and has a troubled family background, which led him to become a cop in the first place - rebelling against a douchebag father who represents everything he disdains and trying to protect his dysfunctional mothers and sisters from rape and violence . What I love most about Sherman is how easy he is to relate to. He also represents that idealistic and noble guy who starts a career and still thinks he can change the world because he's not yet jaded, yet when he finds that things aren't how he thought they would be, he starts to question what he thought was right and McKenzie does a beautiful job of showing us this constant struggle - trying to hold onto your beliefs when faced with challenging new situations that contradict them. When should we make the compromise? Should we ever give into the system? It's fascinating really.

(until Southland of course) Actually, the only other "cop" show I do watch faithfully is Bones. But Bones is nothing like Southland.

When I mentioned teen dramas, I didn't mean it in a bad way. How could I, you know? I, myself, like teen dramas and so do a lot of people who are not teenagers. A lot of them are good shows, especially The OC.

All I meant was that after a while, I started craving something a bit more mature than those shows as well. I truly hope you didn't take offense to it.

I like Bones. It's a good show.

And that's understandable that crime/investigatory shows don't usually spark your interest. I feel that way about medical shows, in fact.

But it's great that you like Southland, and that you are so supportive of Ben's career!

The OC is listed on best tv dramas ever. But I totally disagree that Ryan was outshined by Seth. I found their opinion on Ryan and Ben to be unfair.

I don't think Seth stole every scene he was in (he was great, but to say that I think is overrating him), but they have the right to say what they want to say. For others, Ryan was a more interesting character than Seth and some people think Ben McKenzie is a better actor than Adam Brody while others think Adam Brody was a better actor than Ben McKenzie.

When judging these things, it's usually all subjective. If someone relates to Seth, then it makes sense that they will like him more. If someone connects with Ryan, then it makes sense that they will like him better than Seth and pay more attention to him. Ben is very subtle so you have to pay close attention to his little nuances and all the little things he puts into the character. If you don't, then you'll miss what he's trying to do, but he was wonderful in his role - but if someone watches the show from the standpoint of just wanting to be entertained, they are not going to pay attention to what he was trying to do and that is understandable. He is the kind of actor that is mostly appreciated by fans who watched the show for a deeper reason - wanting to analyze the characters.

I do appreciate objectivity, and I have seen diehard Adam Brody fans give Ben McKenzie enormous praise for his wonderful portrayal on The OC, even though they weren't Ryan fans. But unforunately, a lot of people don't know how to be objective. If someone is being completely honest, they are both good actors and neither outshined the other really. They each just attracted completely different audiences. The author of the article seems to think that his opinion represents the general public's opinion, and I don't think that's necessarily true.

I don't think Ben McKenzie is worried about any of that right now though. What matters is that right now, he is one of the stars of an Emmy award winning, critically acclaimed show. He could care less about this random guy's opinion I'm sure.

I think the Seth/Ryan divide is as simple as a preference for comedy or drama or as you as said who one relates to more. For me, I'm not against drama but I saw so much of myself in Seth and then his humour, so he had to be my favourite of the two. But having said that sometimes people like characters just because it's the gut reaction. I think when you first like a character or a couple it's kind of a gut thing, that's how it's for me in most cases. After that you realise all the reasons why and it becomes justified.

I think most articles of that kind - listing things - are written like that, it's just to make the opinion seem more confident. So I wouldn't take it to heart

most people just find reasons to justify their opinion. you don't need a reason to like someone, but you almost always need a reason if you dislike someone.

because people ask and then you think about all the "annoying/wrong" things the character did in your eyes. and you tend to be a lot more generous with your own favorite.
