RE: My thoughts on Mischa + the comments on The OC

Having given this more thought, I think by large she really doesn't say anything that bad. It's a little sad as a Marissa fan to see her not reflect positively on the show and ergo Marissa, but that said she does seem to cite her main frustration as the excess fame and attention that came with the show. And that is fair, because she has been a victim of a LOT of really cruel scrutiny and from as much as it is possible to tell, she appears to have had a turbulent few years after The OC. Where she can be faulted in her comments is that there is a slight sense of her being presumptuous of still having a good/decent acting career had The OC not happened. That's something that may or may not have happened, and it would be good to show some acknowledgement of the positive of the OC exposure for her stature as an actress. It is true that Mischa's case is not like Ben or Rachel from whom The OC was truly a massive break into the acting world and came when they were all more or less unemployed. Mischa was 16, in school and she had some form of an acting career going on the side. It's very true that The OC was a major platform for future opportunities, one that many actors and actresses would love to have had and she should be appreciative of that, but I can see how from her perspective The OC does not feel like this massive indispensable breakthrough. If she now regrets that choice she made at 16, that's fair and not something that fully deems criticism.

For what it's worth, I don't think she actually hated the experience of working on the show by large. It was obviously not a perfect, rosy experience but also not an entirely miserable one. It's become pretty obvious that pretty much ALL the core four were not entirely happy by the time season 4 was approaching. I recently stumbled upon this old Mischa interview from 2007: Mischa Barton: Growing pains - Features - Films - The Independent It's a brief discussion of The OC but revealing in that, it's apparent Mischa had qualms with the writing of Marissa in season 3 but there's still some kind of fondness for the show. That's perhaps faded over the years and well, that's just something we need to accept and move on I suppose.

I absolutely agree on this. While It would be nice if she could see The oc as this great experience as a RM fan, she is entitled to feel otherwise and since she was actually working on the show and I wasn't , we can't comment on that.

But it is also true as you said her career could have gone the same way even without The OC which Mischa doesn't seem to want to acknowledge. And I can't help but think that's being very ridiculous of her being 28 to think that and not to take any responsibility for how her career has not gone the way she wished. It's Not the fault of The OC at all and it was her own choices and even her slightly above average acting talent that she needs to realize.

I'm glad she still at least has some fondness for the show.

I do kind of appreciate her honesty about it. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with The OC myself. If she has some regrets about doing the show- if it wasn't that great of an experience for her- well, I can't deny her the right to feel that way. It's her life and her feelings about it. She also said that she felt depressed during the show.
Hi Monica! Lovely fan encounter that you posted, thanks for that.

When I read Mischa talking negatively about The O.C., be it as an experience or in retrospect or whatever, it feels like such a shame and it's disappointing because I would happily live in a dream world where everyone working on the show got along really well and they all enjoyed every day on set. I'm sorry if it wasn't like that for her, although it is frustrating if the thing we hear most about Mischa is that she's talking negatively about the show.
I guess it's hard when we don't know if she would be in the spotlight at all if it weren't for The O.C..

Interesting to hear your thoughts on it, Tammy. Especially about the career side of things. When I hear her talking negatively about The O.C. in that respect, I automatically find it unbelievable as it was such a huge opportunity for her, but of course it wasn't a guarantee for a successful acting career afterwards and there's pressure that comes with being on a big show like that.

I'd like to think she's able to think about her whole experience with some fondness!

I can't access the article right now, but when I read it before, I didn't really get the sense that she was complaining about the current state of her movie career. I think she might've just meant that she almost didn't do The OC because she was really enjoying doing movies, and that she was having good experiences on the movie sets, and that her OC experience was not what she expected it to be.

I get the impression that she's a bit weary about doing TV in general, and that she prefers doing movies.

Regardless, all of this doesn't really take away my enjoyment of Marissa, and I think Mischa was lovely in the role. It's a shame that things ended so badly with Marissa getting killed off, partly because the writers didn't know what to do with her character anymore and partly because Josh was reading TWOP.

I was looking at the quotes in the OP. I think Mischa said this in the Fearne Cotton interview she did a while ago:

Quote:
"Actually, filming The OC was awesome fun, most of it. So no, at the time, we were having a good time"

"It's one of those things where I look fondly at it now."
Maybe there are just days where she looks back on the show more fondly and days where she doesn't. Sometimes it goes that way.

Hi Naomi! You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the fan story. Over at the Mischa board, someone mentioned that there are a lot of fan stories like that about Mischa, particularly from kids that visited The OC set

This is pretty cool:

I have heard positive things from people meeting Mischa so the fan story was no surprise to me, but was still such a pleasant read that made me smile. That is pretty cool. Marissa definitely had awesome sense of fashion! Thanks for sharing it, Monica.

^ You're welcome

I have a Teen Vogue issue from September of 2006, not too long after the S3 finale. Mischa's on the cover. She talked about The OC a little. I thought I'd type up some of her quotes from the article, just to give a little more insight into her feelings:

Quote:
"I found out with the rest of the world that I was leaving. I was upset that the press implied that it was my decision, or that I'd been difficult. I loved working on the show and I would gladly have done another season."

"The writers needed a big finale and they didn't know what to do with Marissa anymore; she'd been through pretty much everything. I mean, I worked tediously for those three years and my character did a lot."

"It was like high school. I became so accustomed to seeing the same people, day in and day out. I didn't want it to end weirdly, and it did, a little bit. It was bittersweet."

Aw poor Mischa! It's such a shame they killed her character, especially so abruptly. I see she had fondness but looking back now, it is probably still a sense of it being bittersweet. Thanks for posting that, Monica! Some of the stuff in those quotes would make a great thread title, imo.

Poor Mischa! I don't know if she ever really fully recovered from being fired even to this day. It's a very traumatizing thing to experience when she was only 19/20. And it was done so publicly on a highly publicized tv show. Hell I was fired when I was her age and it was just at a retail store and it affected me then

Yeah, I mean I feel bad for her. The way her character was killed so abruptly was just not fair.

I found the Teen Vogue article over at mischa-b if anyone wants to check it out:

I agree

There were some cute Mischa bloopers in the S3 bloopers. Some pics:

Thanks for the article. I think Mischa really was very affected by how she was written off when I read this.

Also I wasn't paying attention to the quote and she admitted that 'it' ended a bit weirdly which confirms why she is no longer in touch with any of the cast. Which is normal considering how it ended. She might in a way also blame the cast a bit for not helping to get josh to let her stay. Not that they could but perhaps they did nothing and she felt betrayed. As she said it was a little bit like high school.
