-- Degrassi Episodes and Webisodes Now Available at ctv.ca --

Toronto, ON (June 7, 2006) - There's no stopping Degrassi: The Next Generation. After a successful 25th Anniversary season that celebrated 100 episodes, increased viewership and plenty of awards, the series surges forward with production on 19 new episodes for its sixth season on CTV. The series also enters a whole new dimension by joining Canada's first multi-channel, on-demand broadband service. Unveiled Monday at CTV's 2006 Fall Upfront presentation, CTV.ca now features free Degrassi episodes from Season Five and the all-new Degrassi Minis, a series of unique Degrassi Webisodes created exclusively for broadband.

"Progressive and always entertaining, Degrassi is always on the leading edge of what is happening with youth culture," said Susanne Boyce, CTV President of Programming and Chair of the Media Group. "Making the episodes and the Minis available online gives fans another way to keep up to date on the ever-changing lives of their favourite Degrassi characters."

Season Six of Degrassi is daring to be the most provocative and intense season yet, as the series continues to address issues and topics that face adolescents and young adults today. For the first time, the Degrassi series follows some of its graduates through university as they face the ups and downs of post-secondary life. This season, Ellie, Paige, Marco and Craig experience a whole new series of challenges at another level.

The new school year has Degrassi Community School's students caught up in a vicious school rivalry, with life-altering affects for some of its students. Ellie embarks on a hot new romance with an older man while Jimmy, confined to a wheelchair, explores news ways to deal with his sexuality. After a tragic accident, one student will end up in jail, and a new character, a 16-year-old single mom, graces the halls of the school as a new student.

"Last season our characters had to deal with tough issues and even tougher consequences and this school year will be no different," said Linda Schuyler, Executive Producer and CEO, Epitome Pictures Inc. "In a world where life's lessons can be cruel and unrelenting, we're thrilled that our show is back for another season to focus on issues that speak directly to our viewers."

Returning cast regulars are Dalmar Abuzeid as Danny; Sarah Barrable-Tishauer as Liberty; John Bregar as Dylan; Deanna Casaluce as Alex; Daniel Clark as Sean; Ryan Cooley as JT; Jake Goldsbie as Toby; Aubrey Graham as Jimmy; Shenae Grimes as Darcy; Jamie Johnston as Peter; Shane Kippel as Spinner; Mike Lobel as Jay; Miriam McDonald as Emma; Melissa McIntyre as Ashley and Cassie Steele as Manny. Also returning this season for their first year out of high school are Lauren Collins as Paige; Jake Epstein as Craig; Stacey Farber as Ellie and Adamo Ruggiero as Marco.

Returning adult cast members are Stefan Brogren as Archie "Snake" Simpson, Amanda Stepto as Christine "Spike" Nelson, and Melissa Dimarco as Principal Hatzilakos.

James Hurst, 2005 winner of the Writer's Guild of Canada Award, will be returning to the show as Executive Producer, running the story department.

The "Degrassi Minis" are produced by Stefan Brogren (Archie "Snake" Simpson) of Epitome Pictures and gives fans a chance to see their favorite characters in all new scenes and scenarios. While some of the 2-3 minute shorts take place in between existing episodes of the series, giving fans an extra taste of their favorite moments, others are completely fantastical takes on the Degrassi universe. The minis follow the lives of the Degrassi characters, revealing secret crushes and even the return of a beloved Degrassi student.

Encore broadcasts of episodes from Season Five will also air Sundays at 7:30 p.m. ET beginning June 18 on CTV (check local listings). The episodes follow encore episodes of the new original comedy series Alice, I Think.

Last season marked a number of firsts for the popular series including its 25th anniversary, 100th episode, an audience increase of 24 per cent* as well as breaking the one million viewer mark for a single episode for the first time. In addition, the series beat out four American series at the Television Critics Association Awards for "Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming" and took home the coveted surf board for its Teen Choice Award win for "Choice Summer Series", illustrating its growing success across the border.

Six years ago, the Degrassi.tv website was launched and remains a core element of the Degrassi multi-platform experience. Fans of the show are encouraged to check out the award-winning Website at Degrassi.tv - Home of Degrassi: The Next Generation, winner of the 2003 Gemini for Most Popular Website and Best Interactive Award in 2003 and 2002. Produced in association with CTV and Quickplay, Degrassi.tv - Home of Degrassi: The Next Generation provides enhanced storytelling on the web in synchronization with CTV's television broadcasts. Degrassi's online community continues to create lockerpages, journal entries, send d-mails and post messages on the club message boards in record numbers.

Degrassi vs. The Shark

For the first time, series writers have to handle a graduating class that's left the school behind: A `sexier' and `more adult' Degrassi is being promised for Season 6

Interview with Sarah Barrable-Tishaeuer (Liberty on Degrassi)

In the following season, will we see more of Liberty's pregnancy storyline or is it pretty much wrapped up?

You will definitely see a continuation. She is still struggling with the decision she's made. There's going to be a new character coming in that might cause some conflict. That's what to look forward to in season six.

What is the funniest thing that happened on set?

Funniest thing? Well, Ryan Cooley, who plays J.T., and I have a blast. We always have so much fun. We just shot a scene where he had to have five pieces of gum in his mouth and still try to carry out a conversation. That was pretty funny. We always have a good time. I really can't pinpoint any funny moment because, in almost six years of shooting, there's pretty much good times all the way through.

This street race is over in a shot Discusses the street race to occur in season 6

Parents' Guide: Teen TV's Picks and Pans

Davis: I guess the question most teens would want answered is when is Degrassi: The Next Generation coming back and what can be divulged about the new season?

Nollinger: Degrassi returns Sept. 29 (on The N). None of the episodes are ready for previewing yet, so I haven't seen anything. But I have learned that the sixth season opens with a two-parter called "Here Comes Your Man," which ought to blow a few minds: Bad boy Sean is back in town. I don't want to spoil it for everybody, but let's just say that's not good news for Peter and Emma — or even Sean, for that matter. "Disaster" is actually a pretty good word for how things turn out by the end of Part 2.

News from the Exec:

5/16/06
By this time next week we'll be getting close to the end of the first day of shooting of Season 6!!!

We just had a read-through of 603 and 604. Everyone's looking forward to starting filming!

Here's where we're at:

601 Here Comes Your Man Part 1
602 Here Comes Your Man Part 2
603 Can't Hardly Wait
604 True Colours
605 Eyes Without A Face Part 1
606 Eyes Without A Face Part 2
607 not sure yet
608 Crazy Little Thing Called Love

5/17/06
607 is Working for the Weekend

5/23/06
Yes it was Stacey--she just got back from Israel and we were chatting about her trip at the end of the read-through, sounded awesome!!

And we're now finished shooting the first few scenes of the new season--this morning we've been shooting in a classroom and then around the lockers, featuring Emma and Manny and, let's just say another lead character.............

5/24/06
The kissing scene today came off very romantically, looked great!

5/29/06
We had a read-through of 605 and 606 today... and I think we are going to switch 603 and 604 around (i.e. 603 will become 604, and the script that was 604 will become 603)!

5/30/06
A couple of new actors were at the read-through--one playing the new character Mia, and another playing the new character Jesse... some of the actors couldn't be there because they had to be on set!

6/1/06
wow, I just came back from the lcoation where we are shooting today--we are closing off a street in Toronto and have a whole bunch of really cool looking cars--the shooting is going to go VERY late into the night--it's not as warm as it has been recently, so Miriam had these big baggy clothes she put on when she was on break, she joked that she was imppersonating the Michelin Man! It was nice seeing Deanna--I've seen the other actors over the past week or so, but she wasn't at the read-through so this was the first time we'd seen each other in a while. Mike Lobel and Jamie and a returning character were there too!

Can't wait till Monday, lots will be announced (although as it turns out some of the things we were hoping to announce won't be ready to be announced yet, but will be soon--but don't worry, there'll be lots of news).

Oh, and they will also announce the broadcast schedule for Season 2 of Instant Star in Canada!

6/5/06
TUESDAY
On Tuesday, CTV captures the dancing craze with Dancing With The Stars at 8 p.m. When Dancing concludes, CTV will premiere Season 6 of Degrassi: The Next Generation in the time slot with back-to back episodes filling the hour. At 9 p.m. last year’s #1 new drama Criminal Minds starring Mandy Patinkin at 9 p.m. At 10 p.m. CTV returns the night’s No. 1 program with Law and Order: SVU.

6/19/06
All I will say is this: those of you who think we shouldn't follow the characters after they graduate (note that just because they've graduated doesn't necessarily mean they are going to university) have a reasonable point--it is one that we have spent a lot of time debating internally, and we think we've found a way to make it all realistic and also good entertainment. Most of this season will centre around the Degrassi experience still, although as we get near the end of the season you'll see more about what's happening to the graduates, and the storylins are pretty cool, so let's keep an open mind about it.

I've seen rough cuts of the first two episodes, and while I'm sure some of you will like them and others won't, to me they are among the strongest episodes yet. Can't wait till we see final cuts, and then we can add the music and the sound design etc.

Now, I have forgotten what titles I've told you about so far, but anyway here's a recap:

601 "Here Comes Your Man Pt. 1"
602 "Here Comes Your Man Pt. 2"
603 "Can't Hardly Wait"
604 "True Colours"
605 "Eyes Without A Face Pt. 1"
606 "Eyes Without A Face Pt. 2"
607 "Working For The Weekend"
608 "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
609 "Shake the Disease Pt. 1"
610 "Shake the Disease Pt. 2"

6/23/06
For the record, we've been re-thinking about whether the character should die or not. Maybe yes, maybe no!

So after we had a long meeting with the Idols, we toured the set, and introduced them to some of the cast that were in--Cassie and Shane were rehearsing one scene, but they weren't allowed into the scene with [names omitted here] because it was a Closed Set.

They also checked out one of the cars that was featured in the street-racing episode... and had their picture taken in front of the school set!

7/4/06
We've been working on the new opening sequence, which may surprise some people, but we are really liking the direction it is taking. As for the music, it is the same basic track, but we've been working with Dave Ogilvie and Jakalope to remix it and use fewer vocals becase of all the things that will be happening onscreen during the opening sequence!

And I haven't want to supplant what The N may want to announce, but it will be becoming clear to everyone that the traditional mall tours as we know them from the past won't be happening this year, but a large event is being planned to launch the series in the U.S. prior to October...

7/25/06
Hello, hello.

We're just in the process of finalizing the opening sequence--it's quite different from the past, as for the most part each individual cast member will have a shot of them in the foregound, with key past scenes featuring them in the background like swirling memories. The music is essentially the same music, but remixed to be more modern and with no vocals anymore.

We've also just completed the soundmix and post-production on 601 and I think you will be pleasantly shocked at how well the ongoing storylines of the characters who have graduated mix with the storylines of the characters who are still attending Degrassi--and yes there are a few new characters, and I think you're going to end up really liking them.

We've completed shooting up to episode 608, and are now shooting the first two episodes of Instant Star.

On the weekend, a whole group of the Degrassi and Instant Star cast and crew joined us to see the new Kevin Smith movie (Clerks 2)--which is totally the grossest film I think I've ever seen, but very funny, and oddly romantic at the same time.

7/26/06
We're getting ready for the next block of Degrassi--609/610, which features music from a band that is really well-known, and features a character who is linked to music... that's all I can say

8/13/06
To answer a few question:

The Season 6 broadcast in the U.S. will likely be either the first Friday in October or the last Friday in September--no word yet on an exact start date for Canada, although the announced plan is to start in mid-November but running two episodes back-to-back each week...

Yes, Craig is featured in the episodes which have Taking Back Sunday in them.

We have already shot 4 new Minis for this season, and will be shooting at least another 15. One of the Minis also features Taking Back Sunday... and another features someone whose initials are HS!!

As most of you have heard, in place of the mall tours there will be one big event this year which will feature almost all of the Degrassi cast (and Linda and me) in one location in New York... have to wait for The N give out any more details...

As for the movie, we're still working on it, but because of the original delay we have to completely revamp the storyline....

Right now we are shooting Instant Star (Alexz is in the studio today recording tracks for the upcoming episodes--we shoot 303 of Instant Star this week, then 611 of Degrassi next week....

8/19/06
The scene where JT hits Nick in the head with the mascot head wa the one we were shooting when some of the cast members from CSI: Miami visited the set--they had a blast, and it looks great with all the extras there's amajor fight that it is all part of...

---

Confirmed Spoilers:

-- Regular cast member will possibly die
-- Sean, Ashley, and Craig return
-- Mia, Jesse & Nick are new characters
-- 605/606 are about Darcy and myspace
-- JT has the subplot in 605
-- Ellie has the subplot in 606
-- Dylan is in 603
-- Marco and Dylan are sharing an apartment together
-- Jesse is a love interest for Ellie
-- The season 6 opener tackles a really big issue and has a lot of cool things like "hot girls and fast cars" and is a great kick-off to season 6 because it's high energy, high octane (according to Shane Kippel)

Possible scenes from Shake The Disease:
Jake Epstein was sitting on a bench with his luggage next to him, and Stacey Farber approached him. He looked really sad throughout their entire conversation, and he got up out of his chair at the end of the conversation and spoke heatedly with her. Then they called "cut." Sorry I can't give you more - we were preoccupied with not getting in trouble from the crew members and security.

Some residents throughout the Toronto area received letters by mail explaining that there would be some filming going on aroung the neighbourhood. The letter went on to explain that the Filming would be taking place on Wednesday August 2nd from 7am to 3pm near Monarch Park. The scenes that the letter informed the residents of, though they weren't filled with a lot of detail may give away some hints at what could be happening in those episodes. The episodes were 609 and 610.

The three scenes were:
a) a scene of intimidation on the walkway south of the tunnel,
b) a brave girl stepping between rivals at the north side of the tunnel and,
c) a "Romeo and Juliet" balcony scene at the front of 444 Woodfield Road.

Great start, Katie! I love the song We're Not Gonna Take It. I'm thinking "Bitterest Pill" is a follow-up to STD's plot.

I was wondering when they'd finally use 'We're Not Gonna Take It." The song is so juvenile(but I still love it) it's hard to imagine what kind of story they would have in season six.
