Third Watch Season Six Discussion Part #1

Eppy 6.1 ~ MORE MONSTERS - Season Premiere - 09/17/04 - SEASON PREMIERE RESUMES AS COPS FIGHT FOR LIVES AGAINST RAGING MOBSTER; GENE SIMMONS ('KISS') RETURNS TO GUEST-STAR -- In the season premiere, the action resumes from last year's finale as an obsessed mob leader (guest star Gene Simmons from "KISS") continues to unleash his fury over his son's death by trying to kill scores of cops -- especially Detective Cruz (Tia Texada). As the NYPD reels from his attacks, four masked gunmen scythe through the hospital jammed with the wounded. The gun battle rages over multiple floors and Bosco (Jason Wiles) is critically wounded -- causing Cruz to wonder if a fellow cop is in league with the mobsters. Meanwhile, Kim (Kim Raver) is repulsed by the carnage despite some exciting news. Cruz and a large contingent of police officers are at the hospital dealing with a witness, their own injuries and other victims from two separate bombings. Suddenly, four men with bulletproof vests and submachine guns arrive and cause carnage as they try to obliterate the cops and kill the man who can implicate the killing spree's mastermind, vengeful father Donald Mann (recurring guest star GENE SIMMONS of the rock group KISS). Davis endures a mighty hand-to-hand struggle with one of the assassins. Kim saves two innocent bystanders. Sullivan, Monroe and Carlos battle to penetrate the shooters' defenses. Grace tries to protect doctors, nurses and patients in an operating room. And Bosco is gravely injured shielding Yokas. But Cruz manages to capture one gunman and forces him to reveal a crucial clue to Mann's whereabouts. Followed by the distraught Yokas, Cruz sets out to find a traitor within the ranks--and somehow stop Mann before he flees the country. Meanwhile, in the midst of her ordeal at the hospital, Kim copes with the news that she is pregnant. She tries desperately to contact her boyfriend, firefighter Jimmy Doherty (former series star EDDIE CIBRIAN), and finally reunites with him at the station house. He emotionally proposes marriage to her--again--and, this time, she accepts Coby Bell, Eddie Cibrian, Nia Long, Molly Price, Anthony Ruivivar and Skipp Sudduth also star. TV-14

Sunny and I decided it would be nice to start individual threads for each season of Third Watch. I know we have the "Welcome to Camelot" reruns thread, and it will still serve a good purpose if we need it to discuss random episodes we've seen that we aren't sure where it went, or whatever. Or if we end up not using that thread, and these eppy discussion ones instead, it's great. But at least with the season by season discussions, we can let those just now getting certain seasons overseas be able to discuss the season without being too spoiled on others.

I really enjoyed season six, probably more then I should have really considering the lack of Bosco, and Charlie not to mention the total disregard to the Bosco and Faith relationship by the end of the season. Overall I'd rate it my 3rd favorite season (behind season 3 and 1) I really enjoyed the newbies they added which also suprised me because I remember reading about Finney and thinking oh great here comes the Bosco wannabe but he won me over before his first episode was even over. Some argue that they didn't like the Ty/Sully split but as much as i love the two together Finney and Davis had a lot of spunk that kept the show interesting. I also ended up liking Grace (which took me awhile but after the 'apparently i'm amazing talk' how could you not like her and totally ship Grace/Finney)..and if all else fails it's the same season Bosco jumped infront of bullets for Faith and Faith killed for Bosco...now what could be wrong with that?

My sentiments exactly. At the very least, this was an AMAZINGLY intense season of TW. And uh, Cruz died.

I have to agree on this "Monsters" & "More Monsters" was outstanding of course but sadly...I didn´t like the outcome. It was too good to have a resolution lik ethat or well I should say no resolution at all but I should really stay out of the season 6 discussion...nothing good would come out of it now...looking back I even can´t rewatch the 1st eppies with Faith as a Detective now thanks to this Miller

Oh and Cruz died yes she did but I didn´t like that. How they overdid her whole redemption?! Please, I´d take bitch Cruz over this whiny out of character every day...

And I´m out can´t think about it...

ETA: Yes I´m hypocritical I know that but the damage is done...go thank the finale *cough* Bernero *cough* for it

I think that word - INTENSE - best describes this season over anything else.

Well, here's a depressing tidbit. Mercury News considers Third Watch to have had the "worse series finale" of all the ending shows. Although, they say 'producers' ... guess they forgot to consider the actual network that rushed it to an early end.

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercu...n/11770366.htm

Worst series finale: ``Third Watch.'' The producers apparently thought loud explosions and implausible mayhem made for a fitting farewell.

Also from the same article:

And in a month with a high TV body count, we note the passing of Rex Van De Kamp (Steven Culp) on ``Desperate Housewives,'' Caleb Nichol (Alan Dale) on ``The O.C.,'' Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander) on ``NCIS,'' Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles) on ``Smallville,'' Maritza Cruz (Tia Texada) on ``Third Watch'' and Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) on ``Lost.'' Farewell, and may you rest in peace.

I couldn´t agree more and that´s the sadest thing above all...a show I once loved and that was so good...ended like that. And they knew the show ould end, that´s why they choose to destroy the precinct so IMO for having this "destroy the precinct story" we can only blame the writers/ producers...I mean the fact that it was announced so late screamed for a quiet and true goodbye but this explosion and dying and overly drama ruined it and left no room for solutions, character closure (and above all I mean BOSCO & FAITH )....I mean even Cruz dying was a lame solution for her character...and the fact that I hate it that she died as the hero

ITA Alexa ... it's the worst when I have to agree with a critic; who probably only ever watched this episode of Third Watch in their life... But I do to some degree. The "worst" might be going too far, but as "loud explosions and implausible mayhem" goes...well, there's your description. One thing I hated was just way they had to literally "end" everything. Like seriously, the actual precinct had to get destroyed? Everyone had to move away, move on...etc. etc. Since they had such little notice, you know, to prepare, I think it would've been better suited to kind of tie up the storylines they already had open .... (*cough*Mann*cough*) and kind of leave things. Couldn't we just see everyone at Haggerty's or something? Just a 'regular' sort of day? Instead it was all these sudden, incomprehensible revelations and tragedies at once. Not to say Cruz dying was a "tragedy", but as much as I hated her I'd still rather her have lived, simply because of the whole circumstances of her dying. It just screamed "rushed" at me; making it unrealistic. But we go what we got, right? And I'll say it again...for how NBC totally screwed it... Ed did a good job.

Skye! I could not agree more!! I mean I respect the fact that they did try to tie everything up and let us know what happened to everybody a lot of shows don't get the chance and if they do they waste it. But in the case of TW an every day ending would have been the best. Or even an episode like (oh crap I'm blankingo on the name, after hours maybe? the one where the kids burn in the car) a show where they have something dramatic like that and are all together at the end like a big cast pic would have been perfect.

Plus not to mention that although we did get some great Doc time. Kim and Jimmy were wasted as extras, what was the point of that? (and I don't even care for the two of them)

that said...

Season 6 is still one of my favorite seasons.

You can't judge six seasons in 43 minutes.

I so agree some shows are suited to glimpse into the future, etc. But TW has always been an ensemble show, and focused closely on the brotherhood of the entire 55 - the precinct and firehouse. So I felt really ripped off when everyone "left everyone" and it felt really disjointed. An "After Hours" type ending would have -rocked- that's exactly the type I was thinking of. Though, there's some things that still wouldn't have felt the same, where with Doc being at Bellvue, Alex and Lt. Johnson having have died...and Jimmy and Kim would've had to have a "reason" for coming back. It just, I don't know.

The ending was sad because it seemed like everyone was gone. Suddenly I just didn't recognize anyone anymore. Sully didn't want to be a cop anymore, Bosco and Faith never completely resolved anything and fought up to the near last twenty minutes, we never saw 55d or 55c together in a squad one last time, we were overrun with focusing on Finney and Grace, whom I really hadn't come to be all that attached to. And just too many familiar faces were gone.

But like I said, I felt like they tried hard to wrap things up given the circumstances. And yes, S6 was probably one my favorite seasons. Though it's a tight race with S3, which is sooo loved. But More Monsters did it for me; I think that's the tie breaker. That premier had to have been the best ever, I was in awe, mouth-open. Just so awesome. And that's what gave me hope for the rest of the season, and the entire outcome of the show.

I will never, ever forgive NBC for what they did.

I loved 'More Monsters' . For me that was the best, most intense episode ever, and because of poor advertising (shame on you RTE 1) I nearly missed it. Pure luck that I was sitting up late that night (because yes, RTE 1 screen it at like 1 in the morning! ) and although I was exhausted and suffering from extreme fatigue I was still completely caught up. To me it was the Bosco/Faith relationship at its best - lots of shipperness, complete loyalty to one another (Bosco jumped in front of a bullet for her - I mean come on people!! - if that doesnt scream love I don't know what does... lol)

After that it all got a little confusing for me. The PTB seemed to steer away from the Bosco/Faith relationship, and seemed to concentrate more on establishing new characters. Although I understand why they did this, I think they still should have retained some of the pre season four characterisitics such as Sully and Ty's very comical partnership and Carlo's dirty humour. But then again I'm not a script writer so...

It all seemed to get a little too much for me - too much drama not enough humour. There wasn't really a vent for all the really horrible stuff that was going on (like Sully and Ty's crumbling parntership and Bosco and Faith's taut relationship) All the characters seemed to do was fight and although conflict is good too much of it can ruin a show.

I was utterly disappointed by the ultimate episode. It was like the writers went on a murderous rampage killing everything TW related. Too much emphasis was put on Finney/Grace (who personally I didn't really give a crap about) and not enough on the more long standing characters and their relationships. The Faith/Bosco ending was just dyabolical. No resolve, total lack of emotion and feeling, I mean after what seven years that's all they get? I knew they weren't gonna get it together because it would've been too 'out of the blue' but a hug would've been nice!!!

So overall, beginning fabulous, middle a bit iffy, and the ending well...there are no words. And not in a good way...

EXACTLY!! I mean I didn't b*tch to much about the B/F ending on this board but trust me a couple of my friends got an earful about it *coughfaithcough* What a disappointing ending to such a great relationship. We deserved better, they deserved better. ARGH!
