i still can't believe they ended the series without letting us know who the parent is...

Don't they know that closure is very important. They could have and should have filmed an alternate season/series finale to use based upon the ratings.

the ratings were never that spectacular throughout the season, so just too make sure they could have given us a series finale with some closure...

You would have thought that they would have taken that into account but they obviously didnt. Which makes it frustrating for fans.
