"Genre" movies are, by definition, predictable, otherwise they wouldn't follow their genre.
So, of course, 'horror' films need a predictable level of gore (unless they're advertised as exceeding that level or are kind unusual in the bits and pieces that are threatened/and/or spewing blood towards the camera). 'Action' movies are equally predictable, although, when they're good, hopefully enough adrenaline is pumping through your body that you don't mind the fact that the hero (it's usually always a male protagonist because... and yeah, I'm just going to go all #metoo on you, gentle readers, because action/adventure movies are ways for the big studios to ensure $$s for cash cows, using male stereotypes of masculinity to fuel masculine stereotypes of the heterosexual XY genome as the only filmographic source of "heroism") is always going to defeat his enemies, fists or guns flying, CGI or no CGI. But at least, in a romcom, you get to laugh a few times (hopefully) and you get to sit back and allow the endorphins to flow and the adrenaline of daily life to subside. Such is the case within this film. Leap Year starts out with all of the adrenaline that most of us know so well. Amy Adams' character is fueled by adrenaline, is fueled with the drive and certainty that she can "have it all." She is a determined woman. She can't wait to move towards the next stage of her five-year plan, which is matrimony to the man who checks all of the boxes of her list of "man of my dreams." But a storm sends her adrift (yep, that's a thing, but you can also think in terms of fairy tales and Shakespeare's "The Tempest,") and she ends up being driven to Dublin by a "charming" man -- those quotes are definitely earned by a guy who keeps trying to get her goat -- and sends her emotions towards engaging with her real human needs in a mate, rather than the guy who just looks good per a CRV. As a result, I enjoyed the entire movie, not just for the sparks of attraction but also for the journey of discovery of the people involved. Just don't be surprised that the hero and the heroine end up together, because it wouldn't fit the genre if you, a female, ended up cuddling with your significant other, and he/she said, "but I thought they were made for each other?!?"! I loved Matthew. He and Mandy Moore in Chasing Liberty were amazing! I'm sure whenever I watch this I will love him and Amy's chemistry as well.
