The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) #1

I just saw a trailer for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie coming out this spring. The trailer didn't give away much but I loved the books so it should be great. Here is a link to the trailer:

I'm a looking forward to going on a hike with Arthur, Ford, a babble fish and a towel ;)

DanieTreg 04-28-2005 01:26 AM

Ohh, saw the movie on preview night.

Everything I wanted and more!

loquacity 04-29-2005 02:50 AM

I had an overwhelming urge to drink tea after watching this movie.

Alan Rickman, Martin Freeman and Bill Nighy were fab. It was slightly strange to watch their scenes because I kept on thinking about Love Actually and the roles they played there, hee. And it was great seeing Anna Chancellor, even though I can't think of her as any other role besides being Miss Bingley.

I've been singing that dolphin song all day long, and wanting that toaster slicer!

DanieTreg 04-29-2005 05:19 AM

 "So long and thanks for all the fish..."

I loved it (contrary to some 'fans' who have decided to linch it because of the updates) for what it was.
Martin Freeman was excellent as Arthur; more of a guy to relate to than the previous one in the BBC series. Mos Def was also very good as Ford, Bill Nighy... ahhh... wonderful as Slartibartfast!! Sam Rockwell as Zaphod... the was just priceless... and the second head... wow!!! I didn't mind the new character Humma and the 'point of view' gun... I thought it was very clever.
I hope some people understand that the changes were made by Douglas before he died!!!! And I really loved the new Marvin... so cute!

Hhehe the Dolphins were so cute! And funny! And I wanna get that song!

I loved the POV gun. The actors were great. John Malkovich I love, so he was just fantastic. And when he took off his glasses  That was scary.

I loved all the little touches that kept it close to the book, like the whale  and the towels.

Can't wait for a sequel (hopefully there is one. :look: They've gotta do the Restaurant at the End of the Universe!)

shrrshrr 04-29-2005 01:40 PM

Since you all are giving minor spoilers I'm going to change the thread title to reflect that.

And I can't wait to see the film - I'm so glad you all enjoyed it! :D

Cress 04-30-2005 02:59 PM

I'm gonna see it this Sunday with a friend.

I love this movie! It was hysterical. Loved Marvin, the Whale, and the parts about the Great White Handkerchief.

"Bless you!"

"I'm feeling very depressed."

:rotfl:

I cannot wait to see this movie. I've been waiting since last spring! Great to hear some postive feedback about it.

yossarin 04-30-2005 11:20 PM

This movie was mostly bad. Hitchhiker was not a love story, so why the triangle happened was a big mistake. It was enough that Arthur and Zaphod met earlier at a party, but it should have ended at that. I didn't buy the romance/jealousy angle and it distracted from the movie. That said, the flashback to how Arthur and Trillian met was histerical. They never showed that scene in the BBC version.

Did you notice the BBC series theme music during the movie title and the BBC Marvin?? I thought it was a great touch.

Ford was miscast. He should have not been a hug monger. I didn't mind that he was african-american, but he didn't have that something that convinced me that it was Ford Prefect.

Sam Rockwell was awesome as Zaphod. the "I'm from another planet" was hysterical.

One plot point that I hated was that Marvin wasn't left on Magrathea to wait millions of years to see the group at Milliways.

The Narrator moments were good, but there should have been more... Too bad people will miss the last one when the aliens will be eaten by a dog.

Actually, they did show a tiny bit of that scene on the BBC TV series. It's in one of the Guide entries - you see Arthur talking to a girl, then Zaphod's arm around her shoulders, and if you listen closely you hear his pickup line about being from another planet. There was a scene of this in the Infocom game too, and I think it comes up again in the later books (Mostly Harmless maybe?).

But the triangle was always there ... the basics of Arthur and Tricia meeting at a party, and Zaphod stealing her away. They just emphasized it more in this movie than other versions. HHGTTG did become something of a love story in later books, with Arthur and Fenchurch in So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.

Incidentally, there's another Hitchhiker thread over on the Sci-Fi/Fantasy board.

Ooh - good to know. I'm highlighting this so people will see it and visit both boards. :)

 I'm afraid I'll have the same reaction, especially as a rabid tea drinker. Oh, the horror!

By the way - I like your avatar, loquacity...and your screen name, too.

I loved Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin the robot, and it was great to see that Helen Mirren was the voice of Deep Thought. She spent her time watching television!

I guess it needed to have a little love story for the update? It didn't bother me - as a kid I was always a serious Trillian/Arthur shipper!!!

The music from the BBC series was a nice touch, but I think I was the only person on the planet not to notice Douglas' nose! Oh well, seeing it again on Wednesday. Did you all see the BBC Marvin and yell out a cheer?

Mos Def as Ford didn't bother me as much as I though it would. I've always thought of Ford looking like David Dixon (from the TV show), kinda human, but stranger... pity he didn't get the purple-contact lense treatment too.

Sam Rockwell was fantastic! And since we changed the plot around a little, I actually liked Marvin saving the day with the 'point of view' gun!! It would of been funny to have the "I've been waiting all this time in the car park.." line, but oh well, we can't have everything!

I stayed for the credits as I knew something wouldn be missed if I left. That part is so funny... poor dog!

Carla, I LOVE "Restaurant" and I'd so see it if it makes it to a movie!!! (I'm nearly finished that book now... but I know that the "Life" always drags for me).

I'm hearing very mixed reviews... mostly from people who haven't ever heard of Hitchhikers. That's too bad... they've missed out on one hell of a ride!

Cress 05-02-2005 08:33 AM

Aw, I didn't stay for the end of the credits! What dog?

I think they had to have the love story (and the running Vogon story) since they decided against the original cynical ending. Something had to be resolved at the end and hold the movie together. I did like Marvin saving the day. I always felt sad for him (in the TV series) when he died on that ship going into the sun.

LittleMilkJug 05-02-2005 08:41 AM

In the radio series Arthur was angry at Zaphod, because Zaphod had stolen his girl (Or rather, the girl he was trying to chat up at a party). So there was always a kind of love triangle there.

tinydancer821 05-02-2005 08:48 AM

YaY! I'm glad everyone liked it as much as I did. I went to see it yesterday. The theatre was full and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I thought the story transferred very well to film. Mos Def mad an awesome Ford. :)

I hope they make a sequal.

So long and thanks for all the fish...

Raonaild 05-02-2005 11:06 AM

Marvin wasn't left on the surface of Magrathea in the book version, he left on the Heart of Gold at the end with the rest of them. It was in the radio and TV versions where the Restaurant at the End of the Universe was built on the remains of Magrathea.

And Marvin didn't die in that sun after stealing the ship, he survived and lived on to So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.

The thing about HHGTTG, unlike say LotR or Harry Potter, is that nothing is canon. Every version is different, with scenes and characters reorganized to suit the particular version of the story being told. In this movie, the basics of the first part of the story were there - all the versions pretty much start out the same, but deviate more as time goes on. But I noticed a lot of little things that actually came from later stories ... like Zaphod splitting his brain into two so he could get elected president, or the Vogons getting more involved with tracking Zaphod down, or Arthur getting the chance to live on Earth Mark II.

As for Mos Def as Ford ... sorry, but I thought that was the weakest part of this movie. I watched the TV series last night, and even crippled by laughable special effects, the guy who played Ford in that version was way more convincing.

Oh Freddled Gruntbuggly
by Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz

Oh freddled gruntbuggly
Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee.
Groop I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes
And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon,
See if I don't!

:rotfl:

I had so much fun watching this, i thought the movie was really great and i think it always helps when the cinema is full of fans who are really into it - about half of the crowd were in their dressing gowns carrying towels!! (I wish that I had thought of it - the one time i could have gone to the movies in my pj's) Anyway, i think that they did a really good job. I  Martin Freeman and Marvin was just so cute, Alan Rickman did a fantastic job of the voice.

My only criticism was that while it was loaded with great british humour it seems to be missing the sharp satire of the previous inncarnations. I wouldn't have minded seeing a slightly darker portrayal with some underlying social commentary rather than a really bright light and more hollywood version but it was still loads of fun and they were never going to be able to please all the fans.

DanieTreg 05-02-2005 11:41 PM

imajica!!! NOOOO!! STOP IT, you're killing me with that poetry and please don't ask me if I liked it, I'd rather be thrown off the ship. :)

Raonaild is right: very version of HHGTTG is different and therefore the movie should really stand on it's own merits. And yes, after reading most of "Restaurant" last night, they did steal bits and pieces from that book to put in the movie. Good thing too! :)

I'd read so many differering view points about this film from fans to not-really-fans and they complain that it's not like the book. I personally don't think it was supposed to be a direct copy. When I went to the preview, the lady from Buena Vista stood up and warned the crowd that it is a different, up-dated version based on Douglas' ideas before he died and the guys who worked on the film tried their hardest to go with his 'new' version.

I'm seeing it again tomorrow night to refresh my memory and to try and remember the rest of the words to "So Long..." I'm stuck with the first two lines in my head and nothing else...

RedRockSedona 05-03-2005 03:50 AM

I have been a long time fan of the BBC series for 20+ years I have read the books in the early-to-mid 80's which led to me to the great honor of meeting Doug in Santa Monica before he passed.

So for a purest of sorts I mostly liked the movie. I knew if I didn't like it I still would always have the books tapes and DVD so I was prepared going in that it wasn't going to be the same. And still I mostly liked the film.

One or two cheers and jeers

I missed the end of the movie with the dog :( I do remember that from the BBC serial so it wont be a lost. I just wish I stayed now.

A few scenes I was looking forwad to seeing didn't happen...I would have loved to have seen Ford as a penquine and Arthur's arms detaching and drifting off over the pink sea into the setting sun...to Arthors line how am I going to operate my digital watch now? but then digiatal watches are so impressive anymore.

Eagles': Journey of the sorcerer was an absolute must so I am glad that they played it

Simon Jones and the original Marvin cameos were unexpected and great

Replacing Peter Jones with Stephen Fry was seamless

Martin Freeman bats it out of the park!

But then casting mostly was good all around but it is funny the one cast member that I SO did not have a problem with going into the film was the sole complain. Zooey Deschanel did not completely do it for me. I thought that anything would be an improvement over Sandra Dickinson and yet Sandra had a connectiveness that Zooey did not quite seem to have. Now I liked Zooey it is just that Sandra made lines like "Going round Hyde Park Corner on a moped" and "we have normality...anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem." Come off with a bit more finesse like she owned them. Aside from I am a woman I don't need a POV gun I can't think of a line of Zooey that stuck with me

The Magrathea factory floor was incredible

Also the Dolphin was song brilliant so here it goes

so long and thanks for the fish
So sad it should come to this
we tried to warn you all but oh dear.

You may not share our intellect
which might explain your disrespect
for all the natural wonders that grow [around you]

so long, so long, and thanks for the fish.

the world is about to be destroyed
there no point in getting all annoyed
lie back and let the planet dissolve

Despite those nets and tuna fleets,
we thought that most of you were sweet
especially tiny tots and pregnant women

So long, so long, so long, so long, so long,
so long, so long, so long, so long, so long,
so long, so long, and thanks for all the fish.

If I had just one last wish
I would like a tasty fish

If we all could just change one thing
we all would have learnt to sing

come one and all
man and mammal
side by side in life's great gene pool

So long, so long, so long, so long, so long,
so long, so long, so long, so long, so long,
so long, so long, and thanks for all the fish.

DanieTreg 05-03-2005 11:28 PM

RedRock... THANK YOU for the song lyrics!!! Now I can sing along tonight!

And, I'll have to watch out of Simon Jones as I seemed to have missed him the first time around!

DanieTreg 05-04-2005 11:11 PM

Ok, I saw it again and still it rocks.

Couldn't believe I totally looked "through" Simon Jones and missed him the first time I watched it!!! (Must have been having a blonde moment?)

Did anyone else see a flash of DNA's face right at the end of the movie? Just wanted to check to see I wasn't seeing things. :)

imajica 05-04-2005 11:14 PM

cool - now that song is stuck in my head which is fine with me but i think that those i share an office with are starting to get slightly annoyed with the singing!
