James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Deleted Scenes and Guardians 3 | Collider

from james gunn facebook page

Quote:
The Story Behind the Guardians Inferno Video

Many of you have asked me how and why the Guardians Inferno video has come about. As many of you know, the biggest influence on the song, written by our composer Tyler Bates and me, is Meco’s disco-infused version of the Star Wars Theme, which went to number one on Billboard in 1977. It was never really a part of the Star Wars movies, but in my mind it was inextricably tied to the fun of it – I owned the 45 single as a kid and would listen to it on repeat.
There’s also an outrageous “performance” of the song on Britain’s Top of the Pops on YouTube that my friends and I love to joke about. Also from the late seventies, it features folks in strange alien costumes, flappers, seemingly incongruous cowboys and cowgirls and… a lasso performance. Yes, a LASSO PERFORMANCE in a Star Wars video. You know, because of that famous, uh, C3PO lassoing Chewie scene. Or something. (Our nod to this in Guardians Inferno is Sean Gunn as a Cowboy and Michael Rooker as a lion).
Over two years ago, before shooting Vol. 2, Jonathan Schwartz, our Guardians’ Executive Producer, Kevin Feige, our Producer, and I were passing the video around and making jokes about it through texts (Kevin uses the most emojis). I told them that I wanted to create a song and a video for the Guardians Theme in that style for Vol. 2. They were both excited by the prospect.
But then life happened. After all, I had a movie to make – storyboards to draw, Living Planets to cast, and robotic brothels to build (now that I think about it, maybe Vol. 2 is the ultimate tribute to that Top of the Pops video).
And, of course, we needed to work on the score – because, as has been written about so much, Tyler Bates writes the score to the screenplay BEFORE we shoot the film, and we shoot the film to the score on set. So neither of us had time to be working on something as ridiculous and unnecessary as a disco Guardians Theme.
However, the idea for it grew in my mind. As we started shooting I continued talking to Tyler Bates about the idea. And, finally, years later, only a few months before the release of the film, Tyler and I – who were now calling our band “The Sneepers” – began working on the song.
(For those of you who have been reading this Facebook page for a while, you’ll know the Sneepers are a species of aliens I wanted to use from Marvel Comics in Vol. 2 – until I got a letter from the folks at Marvel legal saying I couldn’t because “sneeper” means “clitoris” in Icelandic. I told them that was all the more reason to use it, and I would do so in honor of the Icelandic people. And, eventually, they relented - because becoming an A-list director doesn’t mean you cease to be a gigantic pest.)
Anyway, we finished a rough demo of the song, including lyrics I had written with great care in the back of a car on notes in my iPhone. But we needed a singer, and I knew there was only one person who could fully do the song justice.
David Hasselhoff and I worked together on Vol. 2 for one day, but we made an instant bond. He’s a unique and amazing person, and he’s everything you imagine Hasselhoff to be, only better. The Hoff and I sat down to lunch, I pitched the idea to him, and he excitedly agreed to do it.
He agreed before realizing it was essentially a rap, and the first couple lines included the phrases “Procyon Lotor” and “infantilized sequoia.” And even though one of the more difficult moments in my career was getting the Hoff to correctly say “infantilized” in the correct off-rhythm, the Hoff just freaking killed it in the recording studio. Meanwhile, we laid down tracks of me, our co-producer Simon Hatt, and David Yarovesky (more on him in a sec), chanting “Zardu Hasselfrau” in the background.
That day in the recording studio, I also filmed David Hasselhoff on my iPhone saying the last line in the song – “In these times of hardship, just remember: We. Are. Groot.” I drove directly over to my editors and asked if there was still time to put it in the end credits of Vol. 2. There was, barely. And you can see it at the very end of the credits today.
Tyler and I still didn’t know what to name the song. I was pretty high on “The Winner of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Song,” but Marvel legal weren’t too sure of the legality of this (like I said: I’m a pest). So when Simon Hatt threw out “Guardians Inferno” we ran with it.
And, thankfully, Marvel Home Video agreed to finance the video. It had to be made while I was in the middle of the Guardians Vol. 2 press tour, so there was no way I could direct it myself. So I asked the one friend I trusted to do such a thing – David Yarovesky, a great music video director. Simon Hatt and I would produce.
We got a great team together, including Autumn Steed, who is responsible for the astounding costumes, and Lindsey Blaufarb and Craig Hollamon who did the choreography.
We also rented actual old 70’s tube cameras – like what the Top of the Pops video was originally shot on – to make the grain and look authentic. This was the most expensive part of the shoot. I know people save money by creating the look in post-production – I did it myself on our James Gunn's PG Porn web series, where we gave some of the shorts an old VHS look – but it never comes off as truly authentic. If folks turned on this video, we wanted them to initially think it was actually from over thirty years ago.
Originally, the video wasn’t something I thought of the cast being involved with. It was just going to be the dancers and David Hasselhoff. The cast are all busy people, so why would they want to be a part of the most insane thing I’ve ever done? Then I remembered that Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff were a part of the cast. They regularly send me 3 a.m. karaoke videos of themselves singing songs from the Guardians soundtracks. They were more than insane enough to want to do this. When approached, Karen told me it was the moment she’d been waiting her entire life for. Pom just made a bunch of excited squealing sounds.
Unbeknownst to me, Simon had also asked Dave Bautista (Batista) and my brother Sean if they would be in the video, and they both agreed.
And once they were all involved, I guess we HAD to ask Rooker because Rooker dancing is like a car accident on the side of the highway you just can’t look away from. Who doesn’t want that in their video?
And of course, we were using the word “cameo” so many times in the production offices, it was like summoning the King of Cameos: so I asked my friend and hero Stan Lee to be in it. And we felt a little bad that Guillermo from the Jimmy Kimmel Show had his cameo mostly cut from Vol. 2, so we put him in there too.
It’s important to note that none of these actors got paid do this – they all did it to have fun and because they’re awesome.
The shoot was glorious. Dave Yarovesky and the choreographers and the dancers and the set builders went way beyond my expectations. From Sean with his Hudson Brothers wig to Bautista with his little angel wings, everyone had a blast – well, except maybe Rooker, who thought Autumn was joking when he saw the costume he was going to wear (like I haven’t caught him wearing full body polyester jumpsuits alone in his trailer many times). And for those of you who have asked - yes, that's me as the drummer in the video.
After the shoot, I flew off to do press in London while Dave and Andrew Eisen, the first assistant director on Vol. 2, edited the video and worked on the VFX with my old friends over at Puny.
While in London, I was having dinner with the cast and we were all laughing over how fun it all was, when Zoe and Chris were, like, “Uh, guys, why didn’t you ask us?”
My face made the flat face emoji.
To be honest, I really thought Zoe Saldana and Chris Pratt are such big stars and would be so busy I would be bothering them by asking them. But the truth it, they’re both full team players who love bell bottoms and fake mustaches and Rooker not being able to hit a keyboard in time as much as the next person. So when we flew back, we went shot Zoe’s part in L.A. and we shot Chris’s part remotely from London on the set of Jurassic World 2 (and thanks to the JW2 crew members who helped us out).
And that’s how we got here.
You can check out the video again at the link below. Let us know below what you think of it in the comments here. And you can digitally download Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 NOW, or you can buy it on Blu-Ray, DVD, or 4K UHD this upcoming Tuesday, August 22. And, yes, Guardians Inferno will be on the Blu-Ray and 4K versions.

technically it will be the second sequel, but the 3rd movie in the franchise.

As for Chris Pratt's separation from his wife Anna Faris, it is sad...I haven't really been following Pratt's personal life so I can't really say that he and Anna seemed like the "perfect" couple because I really don't know, but it is quite sad whenever you read about a relationship that fails. There's currently so many rumors & speculations brewing about why the couple separated and one of the most widely speculated rumors is that his wife Anna was jealous of his fame. But we'll never know what happens behind closed doors, I hope they'll remain good friends for the sake of their son.

That's true. We only see the surface and how they show themselves in public.
