Fight Scenes in Film (Physical & Verbal) #1: The Ultimate Showdowns

The Best and Worst Showdowns in Film

Here's a new thread to discuss your all-time favorite (or, if you wish, least favorite) fight scenes in movies!

Feel free to talk in-depth about the ones you choose.

You can choose physical and/or verbal fights to discuss!

Here are my favorites:

CHARACTER/FILM: Leo and Jin in House of Flying Daggers

SUMMARY + WHY I ENJOY IT: The original preparation for battle against The House of the Flying Daggers take back stage, as the final showdown in the film focuses on a duel between two former best friends in the freezing snow. I just loved the brutality of the fight and how they basically wear each other down to near-death over their intense love for the same woman.

CHARACTER/FILM: Lee in Enter The Dragon

SUMMARY + WHY I ENJOY IT: Lee confronting the man (with a claw in place of a hand) who brutally killed his good friend, in a spectacular scene full of mirrors.

CHARACTER/FILM: Oh Dae-Su in Oldboy

SUMMARY + WHY I ENJOY IT: Relentless energy, exhausting to watch, as Oh Dae-Su battles against various numbers of men who are whacking him with baseball bats and other dangerous weapons as he can only use his fists and feet to defend himself. Amazingly filmed in one long camera shot.

CHARACTER/FILM: Eric Draven in The Crow

SUMMARY + WHY I ENJOY IT: Eric's first discovery of his immortal powers and his descent into madness upon a need for revenge. Sees the first man involved in torturing/raping his fiancee and unleashes hell upon him.

As the late, great Brandon Lee once said, "I've never seen something where the violence is as justified as it is [in The Crow]; there's very little need for compassion."

Okay, everyone, post away! Discuss!

Great idea for a thread!

One of my all time favourite Fight Sequences is from Kill Bill VOL 1.

Thank you There are so many to choose from

Uma Thurman is kick-ass

Cool fact: Quentin Tarantino cast Chiaki Kuriyama in Kill Bill because he admired her performance in BATTLE ROYALE

Which reminds me, in that movie, of her intense face/off with a guy who tries to make a move on her in BR and she... Well, it ends bloodily -

I remember parts of BR from my first watch, but not the story in full and details.

I'm so tired tonight, so maybe I'll plan to watch tomorrow!

Some of my all time favourite fight scenes take place in The Lord of the Rings films and The Hobbit Trilogy.

Okay Millie! Can't wait for you to post your review/thoughts about it in the BR thread Is it the Extended cut you'll be seeing? That's the best version, imo

I love majestic birds-eye view battle shots like in those GIFs

Another epic fight scene Hector and Achilles (Eric Bana and Brad Pitt) in TROY

Showcases the two main characters having their own battle, Hector not willing to fight him but not willing to die either because he's a loving family man, and Achilles (to me) turns into the villain in this scene. Such an underrated movie

So agree with you on the Troy battle scene!

The version I have for BR is 2 hours 2 mins, is that the extended cut?

Justice for Hector Bana's scenes were the best part of the movie.

Also, I love it when Achilles is reduced to tears upon seeing Hector's dead body, and calls him his "brother". You can tell that he killed him irrationally and deeply regrets it.

Tereza! Yes, I never cared about the supposed historical inaccuracies in the movie (teachers were constantly saying it was a poor representation of 'The Iliad' ) ...Because to me, those scenes between Bana and Pitt had emotional depth.

Achilles fought for legendary status; Hector fought for his country. Two opposites in ideals but they had a deep respect for each other, which makes their duel heartbreaking.

Well if the 'teachers' who made those comments about it's portrayal knew that it was inspired by 'The Iliad' and not fact based on it! There's a difference!

^ Exactly but I guess in their POV, if you're representing something historical and significant, then either do it completely faithful or not at all.

I remember having an argument with a Classics teacher about it she kept saying "I'd hate to think that my class is brainwashed by that movie when they should be getting the details from the source material"

CHARACTER/FILM: Tony Montana in Scarface

SUMMARY + WHY I ENJOY IT: Sosa unleashes bloody terror upon Tony and his friends at his mansion in an all-out shootout ending. Really symbolic of the hell that Tony is caught up in and the mess he has made of his life. Powerful stuff as he's basically The Terminator, until some coward comes at him from behind

I just find people are too close minded when it comes to those fine print lines.

There's:

Based on a True Story
Inspired by Actual Events
This is a true story

Some blurb summary on the story followed by these lines: "The following is an interpretation of those events".

The point being, read closely, because no where does it ever say, based word for word on fact and the true exact history.

Well put.

And that's the unfortunate thing -- lots of people can't be bothered to differentiate.
