I agree... He stalked her because she looked like Katherine and then just "had to know her". She was in mourning during that time (and was in the hospital for some of it I guess) and not even her real normal self and really just how "well" could he have known her during that time. He just wanted to become a part of her life because 1) she looked like Katherine 2) was human 3) seemed nice. The combo was the only reason he walked into her life and then it was all "girl meets boy, boy meets girl and episode 2 they are calling themselves epic as both are just that desperate to hold onto anyone to feel 'alive' again somehow". There was no real "getting to know" period. Actually the relationship is grounded on Stefan's lies and deceit.

Damon on the other hand was not looking for a Katherine replacement as he was in love with Katherine and was trying to get her back! He saw Elena only as "Elena", did not get into her life because she looked like Katherine or because he needed to feel alive or anything. They just happened to be in the same town due to what plan HE had, and during his stay they got closer, got to know one another better, and come to care for and love eachother! It is a REAL relationship based on trust and mutual connection and experiences shared!

Damon didnt exactly plan on falling in love with Elena. He just wanted to open the tomb. Him falling in love with Elena just happened. And it had nothing to do with her looking like Katherine
