Agreed. At least he wasn't trying to kill Damon, which seems to be Mikael's only interest when it comes to Klaus.

I think Damon was too much of a "free spirit" for his father, he wanted Damon to be more responsible and acting withing strict social norms, it sounded like.

That could be it. Not that it's a good excuse to hate him, Damon was a grown up person and had the right to live his life however he wanted.
