No, Gibson is not staying off the screen. He's acting in a ton of movies. And what I'm guessing Gibson would like to do to Jews is not a lesser offence.
He also beat up his girlfriend when she was holding the baby, but everybody's forgotten about that.

i think he has been focusing on his racing for a bit this movie is the recent thing he has done
