The story is about football as we call it here

and I am aware that Fassbender likes football. I can watch the odd game if there are stakes but I'm not interested in making anyone look heroic just because they play football

Just so you know, we Americans didn't come up with the idea of calling Rugby by the name "football." That was already the name of an English Rugby league or union, called "Rugby Football."
