Sherbrooke had a big bonfire celebration. Every year, you'd hear of the number of morons who'd either died or almost died either falling into said bonfire or trying to jump over it. But beyond that... both holidays were pretty low-key. I've only ever been to the fireworks festival on a sporadic basis, so I never noticed there was a Canada Day one. __________________

The biggest park in Sherbrooke has a fairly big lake. (Honestly, it's been decades and I was never someone who hung out in parks, so let's take all of this with a grain of salt.) That's where they had the bonfire. I don't know if the lake's proximity made it safer. Or maybe it was just tradition? No clue.
I never went to it either. Just kept hearing about the idiots who killed themselves or gave it their best shot. I went to Fantasia one year. Well, I went to four movies. A... I wouldn't call her a friend. But someone I knew thought I'd be into it and gave me the programme to choose something I'd like to see. I gave her four options, thinking she'd pick one that interested her. We went to all four. It was cool. I liked it well enough. I guess I'm just more of a homebody. Like, what I miss about being to go around is Bulk Barn and Cafe Ceramik. David's Tea and Yves Rocher. The Lindt store at the Eaton Centre. Although, I'm not much of a shopper. I'm more of a researcher, then hit the store, run up that bill and then go home again. __________________

There really wasn't much to do in Sherbrooke. And, if you imagine, that was the "big town" for us.
If I recall, two of the movies we saw were Korean and I think the other two were Japanese... There were definitely Korean flicks amongs the lot, but I seem to remember it was two Korean and two from another Asian country and I really think it was Japan, but it's been a while. One was kinda vintage, two were comedies and one was actually pretty melodramatic. I wouldn't have gone for horror or sci-fi that's too sci-fi. Like, my appreciation of sci-fi is not optimal. I like Star Wars, Star Trek, the Joss Whedon stuff and that's essentially it. I like sci-fi when it's not about world building or whatever. Like, if you ask the author, Outlander's about time travel, but if that's all it was about, I wouldn't be into it. The love story, the family stuff, that's why I'm interested. __________________

i can imagine it is the only big town in the area, there's a university and that's pretty much it
I like japanese and korean movies. i like the time travelling genre from Doctor Who to Netflix's Dark. I never watched Outlander. yeah world building is huge in the sci-fi genre that's mainly why people like it everything is new from the world as we know it. __________________

Technically, there are two universities in Sherbrooke, since Lennoxville was merged with it. I should know. I actually attended Bishop's. Of course, Bishop's was a whole other situation when it comes to there not being a whole lot to do if the students were from out of town. Which loads were. It's so close to the States and so comparatively cheap...
Yeah, that's why I have a hard time getting into sci-fi. I don't mind world building, but I'd prefer living in that world a while instead of just doing more world building. __________________

The one great thing about Bishop was how smol it was. You couldn't beat the prof-to-student ratio. I had a class once where we were three students. I had classes where we were nearly a hundred, but most of my classes were around the 20 student total. You have to work hard to fail when you have that kind of access...
Well, if you're a big nerd for school like me. __________________

wow a 20 people class room in university. that's a very different learning experience, it must be beneficial.
i've been thinking to go back to university and study creative writing. so much to think about. the last time i was in school was 2012, also i need to have my own place again. writing is all i want to do and feel passionate about but won't be easy to live off it. this pandemic isn't helping. __________________

Well, for what it's worth, when I was in journalism school, there was a lot of talk about how most of us would wind up doing PR or marketing. A friend of mine from back then is now Director of something like Communications for McGill. According to his LinkedIn. We lost touch. But the point is, there are ways to make it work. You just have to be creative with your vision of what's creative.
And, hey, plenty of writers find a way to make a living. I just don't happen to know how. But it happens. __________________

I write poems. Haha the market is so small for poetry. But money isn't the reason we write
Ahh LinkedIn. A few of my former colleagues went to become management now. I'm nowhere near that. I'm glad I travelled and experience new things. __________________

There are poets that make a living too. In French, slammers are all the rage, right?
But that will be your path to find. At least you know what you want, what you like. That helps. __________________

I mainly write in English and occasionally write French poems. Trying to make a living off it in Quebec will be challenging, not to mention being a visible minority and having a non-francophone name. I do perform my own stuff but not a slammer. I normally go to open-mic nights, love it
