i reckon - and no matter what people may say - what killed us last year, besides a rotten song, was the fact the Iraq war was going on and all the countries decided to be 'political' towards the UK as a whole.

I'm intrigued. I'm too innocent to buy such magazines

Leeann Europe just seems to dislike us generally but yeah, I think the Iraq war probably had something to do with it. Wasn't there a thing about fish too in the 80s or something - that's why Spain never vote for us

Well, not too sure about that!

I'd say that the people who are interested in politics and the ones that actually CALL and vote for songs are two different pairs of shoes.. as we say in Germany
I don't mean to offend anyone who really loves the Eurovision contest and of course I might be wrong, but... hmmmm...
Can't really see anything political there...

Well, I wouldn't put it like that. There are no hostile feelings, but having lived here I realize that many people here are anti-Europe and this might irritate others.
People I have talked to here insist that Britain is an island and that they don't want to be part of Europe or have the Euro... we even have the big posters everywhere now:
Quote:
Say no to European Union
and even though people may have their reasons (and among them some good ones): The first impression is that many people in Britain don't like the continent & don't want anything to do with it and I already had some discussions where I got quite defensive...
I've realized though that many young people and children think differently about that matter...

I really like the idea of a united Europe and it would be great if we were all part of it...

I think the UK is more separate from Europe, physically and metaphorically. I think a lot of people have a problem with the EU because it's seen as holding the UK back a bit or something, like we have to make compromises. The problem with a central government like that is that it doesn't take into account how different individual countries are. And a lot of EU law is crappy I do think a united Europe could be good, and it'd be nice to have a greater sense of belonging to something. I just can't see it happening though. The whole mentality is so different in different European countries...the Mediterranean lifestyle is practically the opposite of ours for example. I think a lot of Brits see themselves closer to the US than the rest of Europe. Not that that's a good thing when George is still in power
