Yeah, it pains me that I can't watch this series in full. There's evidence online that by S6 the show was quite funny. And in S5 I think it was, Melissa goes full-on crazy. I saw a compilation of those scenes. Now I really want to see how it builds and progresses.

A staunch Catholic, Jane Wyman scrapped a proposed lesbian storyline that was to involve Jane Badler's character Meredith Baxter and the character of Erin Jones. Meredith and Erin were rewritten to be sisters instead.
