New thread, candies. So, first, why this title ? well, we are just starting discussing the second season of the show. Meaning we are discussing the first episode "skin and bones". And this is in this episode where Maria says to Michael "so I hear ex-cons are great in bed". We decided to have a little fun with that, and here is our new title. Hope you like it .


Okay, so I have watched the episode :

- Max is seeing a shrink. Which tells a lot. Apparently, the Evans, who are loving but kind of absent-minded parents, noticed that something was wrong with their son. So if those parents could make a difference between Max pre-Destiny and post-Destiny, it means that he changed radically. Enough to worry his parents who decided to send him to a shrink.

- the shrink saying that what Max is going through is classical among teenagers, and Max thinking about what he went through this last year. Yep, classical for a teenager to be kidnapped, tortured, to lose his girlfriend, learned that he had died on another planet where he was a king, was recreated as an alien/human hybrid, was supposed to save his people and follow his destiny with a girl he wasn't in love with. That's a lot, no wonder he went loco, as the spanish say.

- in Max's memory of that summer, when he, Michael and the sheriff buried Pierce, he clearly associates himself with Pierce's death : "we killed a man". Technically, Michael killed him and is suffering for that, but Max also feels guilty. Maybe because he helped getting rid of the body with the sheriff, making him an accomplice ?

- Grant Sorenson digging at the exact place where Pierce was buried : what are the odds ? none, so who gave him the tip ? Was he already possessed by the Gandarium at that time, and if so, how could the Gandarium know about where Pierce's body was buried ?

- Maria watching Nacedo posing as Pierce on TV, and commenting about not being into shapeshifters, but still, Nacedo as Pierce rocked. Well, the guy who played Pierce was hot.

- The girlfriend talk between Max and Maria, about Liz, was hilarious, especially when Max reminds Maria of her 5 phonecalls to Michael in the last 2d ays, and Maria's insincerity in her answer "what's your point ?". It was funny, because here she was, giving lessons to Max, but not applying them to herself. She was being insincere, and it was so funny to see. How blind she could be.

- Not liking Isabel very much (sorry AlexEvans), in the scene where she meets Grant Sorenson for the first time. Here is Alex, trying to have a relationship with her, to distract her, and what does she answer ? "Alex, go investigate the cadmium x". "Alex, I can't be involved and date a guy". Then Grant Sorenson appears out of nowhere and she is drooling and smiling. The guy was handsome and she found him sexy, just in front of Alex and after her little speech .

- Michael is training with Tess and he can explode rocks without waving his hand, just with his mind. And in the scene that follows, Michael asked the right questions : what was Sorenson doing digging in the middle of the desert ? what if he was an enemy ? Clever. And it's obvious that Max wasn't ready to act as a leader. He tried, but I don't think that relying too much on Valenti was such a great idea. Valenti was just a man, and there were other police officers in Roswell investigating the case, Valenti couldn't handle everything. Michael was right to call Nacedo, even if Nacedo himself and Max didn't want him to call without Max's agreement.

- Who was following Michael, when he was spying on the police investigation at the crime site ? Courtney ? another skin ?

- Liz said that she wanted a fresh start, by finding a new job. It's foreshadowing of the whole season, Liz being torn between the alien abyss and the normal life, that she wants/doesn't want/wants....

- Can someone explain to me how Nacedo could have been Whitaker's lover for months and not knowing that she was a skin ? Either skins can mindwarp (interesting in that case, since it's Tess power, was Ava a skin in her previous life ?), or Whittaker and Nacedo were secret allees. But later on, Nacedo is shocked to find a piece of skin, it looked like he didn't know there were skins in Roswell.

- While in jail, Michael reveals to the sheriff, that he feels guilty, but also that he projects in the future by training. But he doesn't know what to do. It's like the group are kids playing to be adults, but they are not. They don't have the answers, they don't have the education, the maturing to play leader, soldier, queen, but they all try to be what they are not. No wonder so many bad things happened in the second season, they weren't armed to take those important decisions and sometimes, they failed.

- Michael doesn't buy that his destiny is with Isabel. Good to know right from the start of the second season, that it's never going to happen. But there is Courtney in the background, now.

Regarding 285 South and Michael being able to get the flash from the key when Maria stood near him - I agree that it was because Maria has faith in him. He gives her a quick little surprised glance when she tells him to try it again - you can tell that it means something to him that she has faith in his ability to do this. Michael's used to feeling like the screw-up, that he can't control his powers or do much, yet here was Maria, the girl whose car he stole and who he "abducted", having faith in his ability to get another vision and help the group. Michael always seems to do better with his powers when he's dealing with someone who does have faith in him - here, when he heals Riverdog's ankle, improving in his powers while training with Tess over the summer between seasons.

I shudder to think how horribly depressed Max must have been over the summer if his parents decided he needed to see a psychologist (the Evanses are loving parents, but not terribly observant, so it was must have been bad for them to notice).

The scene between Michael and Valenti in the jail cell is my favorite part of the episode. I feel so badly for Michael there - between his guilt over killing Pierce and his fears over what's coming, he's being torn apart. But I love that he trusts Valenti enough now to confide in him.

No, I pretty much have to agree, Xmag. Definitely did not like that part of the episode (and it still makes no sense to me, either in terms of what Isabel was thinking, or in terms of what the writers were thinking or what audience that storyline was supposed to appeal to). Although I think Isabel decided she could date a guy she wasn't involved with but still... grrr.

I also agree more generally. I did like seeing Valenti try to help Michael.

I don't know if Max's "we" refers to Max helping bury the body, or Max taking responsibility more generally, as the group's leader, for their actions. Pierce was killed during the execution of a plan all the aliens (plus Valenti) were involved in, so there's a certain truth to what Max is saying. I don't know how much putting it that way helped Michael, but it's good to see Max trying.

I've always been a Spike fan, that's why I chose this avie. The way he was with Drusilla, in the second season, (or with Dawn, too). He loved Drusilla, while as a vampire, according to Giles, or Angel, vampires don't love. And also I love how funny he could be, or the fact that he loved food, drinks, soap operas.... He was an usual vampire.

Maybe Michael needed people to trust him, for his powers to develop. Their powers were linked to their emotions, so if he was feeling good, if he felt trusted then he was confident enough to have his powers under control.

Yeah, that's weird how, in this scene, Isabel says no to going to a movie with Alex because it's too dangerous, but still ask him to search the net about the cadmium x. Then Grant arrives and bam, she does a 180 and is all smile with him, it was infuriating. I was thinking about Alex, or in RL, if something like that occurred to me. I would have been so hurt to be rejected the way Alex was here.

I think that was part of it. It was like in early S1 - Isabel dated, but it was always pretty superficial. She didn't really care much about the guys, so it wasn't a threat to her heart. She could keep emotional distance from them. Dating Alex was always different - it was more real. Grant fit into the superficial category. (And basically, I always felt that so did Jesse in the third season.) Although honestly, I never got the appeal of Grant. He didn't seem at all appealing to me as a character.

Although Drusilla disagreed with that statement. She tells Buffy that they can love (although it does usually seem to be a rather selfish and obsessive love - still some actions of Spike's do appear genuinely unselfish and sacrificing).

I think Max genuinely felt that it was at least the three of them, Michael, Max, & Valenti, that had a part in Pierce's death even though Michael had done the actual killing.

I don't think Maria was being insincere. I just think she truly didn't see the correlation between Max pining over Liz and herself doing the same towards Michael. I guess maybe she figured that since Michael was at least still in town, that it wasn't the same situation as Max & Liz.

Yeah, I think this is the only time we see Michael use his powers without holding up his hand. Although I remember seeing Max use his powers like that once (The Convention when he's pushing the gun away from Hubble) and Tess with the fireball in "Wipeout".

Apparently she did a body sweep on herself and didn't shed around him. I don't think that Nacedo was aware that he gave off flashes. When he had kissed Liz as Max the previous season, he didn't realize she was aware that something was off. At least I don't remember him being aware.

I love the scene between Michael and Valenti in the jail. It just shows how much Michael trusts, respects, and looks up to Valenti. I always felt that Valenti was a true Father-figure for Michael, for all of them really, but it was especially true for Michael even though they might not have had a lot of screen time together.

The scene at the end between Michael and Maria, oh my gosh, you just have to feel for Maria when Michael tells her, "I know you do, but don't." after she's told him she misses him. She just looks so lost and forlorn, you want to smack Michael upside the head for being an idiot! The way he stays looking at her though, you know he misses her too. He also knows he hurt her and he doesn't want to, but doesn't see any other way either.

I've read on a website that has cut scenes & dialogue from Roswell, can't remember the name offhand though, that after that scene between Michael and Maria, that Max comes up to Maria and tells her, "Let him come to you," (which she had told him earlier regarding Liz) to which she responds, "Shut up!". I think they ended it the right way though. Especially with the way that the next episode starts, you can tell that Michael didn't mean what he'd told her.

That's true ! Their relationship was a weird one, maybe that's why it worked. Because they were both kind of weird, separately. At least, compared to normal characters.

You think ? well, it's Maria, so it's hard to tell if she was deliberatly refusing to aknowledge the similarities in her situation and in Max's situation, or if she was being insincere. Like a "do as I say, not as I do" kind of thing. But it was still funny to see.

I think Michael was about to answer "I miss you too", but he changed his mind at the last second. He had to be a soldier, a stonewall, and not feel things. Again a scene where he was torn in two, alien vs human, duty vs love.

When I was watching that scene, it was like Isabel was eating Grant Sorenson with her eyes. It didn't look like a case of "oh, I can date this much older guy because I can keep a distance between us", but more "ouah, I find that guy gorgeous and I can't wait to get my hands on him". What you said made sense, but that's not what I felt with the way KH played that scene.


Now, on another subject, in this episode, the girls were clearly dressed differently than the previous season. Isabel was wearing leather almost from the beginning of that episode until the end, Maria had a short dress, Liz had classic/more adult clothes. Even Michael (if you put his new haircut aside) had a more tough look. It's like in one summer, the characters went from being normal teenagers to hot, tormented characters.

Interesting. Maybe Maria thought that Max should realize Liz fled across the country to get away from him, so he should give the girl some space. But it is ironic that she can't do the same thing regarding Michael. Of course, it's always easier to give advice than to follow it.

That's an interesting point. I agree - I don't think Nasedo realizes that he's giving off flashes. Which seems to suggest that he's not aware that can happen. And it would seem to imply (based on what we learn about the flashes later) that he doesn't have any defenses towards Liz. So, is this just because he doesn't know enough to raise his defenses? Or would he not care, even if he did know, because he figures Liz will probably be dead soon anyway? Because Nasedo doesn't really seem to be the sort who's emotionally open as a general rule.

I completely agree. I love Valenti as father-figure for them all, but Michael especially.

Actually, I always took it as Michael being sort-of sympathetic towards Maria, not one of his "stupid Michael" moments. He doesn't want Maria to keep missing him (even though he can't help missing her). The way I always took it was that Michael understands how Maria feels, because he feels the same way, but he genuinely doesn't want her to keep missing him and hurting (the way he's hurting). He broke up with her to keep her safe - he wouldn't want her to be in any pain because of him. For her own sake, he would want her to be able to be happy.

Oh, I never said that Isabel wasn't physically attracted to Grant. That's a part of a relationship, but not the whole thing. I'm sure she was attracted to Jesse, too (Jesse was awfully good looking ). But I think that, regarding her decision not to pursue things with Alex yet being completely okay with dating Grant, that the fact that Grant wasn't a part of the alien conspiracy (at least, not that she knew of at that time) had a lot to do with things. It was safer to keep things on a superficial dating level, rather than being with someone who actually knew her and who was an emotional risk.

Interesting how they thought of each other in exactly the same way. It was the same thing with the "vibe" comment. How weird was it that Michael and Maria were thinking the same thing about their attraction and worded it the exactly the same way, too ? Great minds think alike, you know .

Cyanide Rose : guess what is airing on tv ? Hartley, once again. I still fall for Drazic and Anita, even though I have seen the series at least twice. They were so Michael and Maria"ish", in their own way.

I like to watch old Roswell episodes. I haven't seen them in such a long time, it was like I had fanon Michael and Maria in my mind, because I was more involved in the fanfic world. But now that I watch the episodes, I realize that in general, I prefer the canon characters to the fanon ones.

Not that I don't like fanfics (well, I don't read a lot of them now), but the real Michael and Maria were more appealing on screen.

In general, I agree. But the fan fic I like tends to stick pretty close to the characterizations from the show (even though sometimes the characters grow and evolve, they don't change fundamentally). But then, I don't read much Roswell fic anymore. Recently, I've been reading a long HP fic (and doing it rather slowly when I have the time). After I finish that, who knows?
