House of the Dragon #2: "Dreams didn't make us Kings. Dragons did."

House of the Dragon

x

House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019), it is the second show in the franchise, created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. Both series are based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by Martin. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are the showrunners. Based on parts of the novel Fire & Blood, the series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. It portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons".

After what happened with the conclusion of Game of Thrones, I vowed to never revisit anything from that universe, but ended up caving and watching the first episode of this show, and while there is still a part of me that wishes the show's connections to GoT were nonexistent and it existed essentially as a 'reboot' of the Westerosi world, I did find myself enjoying what the first episode sets up.

I also have a very different view of the characters than some other people seem to, particularly Daemon, in that I really don't see him as being all that bad. If anything, he fills the same archetype as Jaime Lannister, whom I liked because he existed entirely in the spaces between good and bad.

Time will tell as to whether or not HotD erases the hate I still feel towards GoT, but for now, I'm going to see the Dance of the Dragons, Act 1 (AKA Season 1) through to its end.

I'm glad your watching and you're right. Daemon is meant to be good and bad at the same time so Jaime Lannister fits

Even when a lot of the GoT fandom started championing redemption for Jaime because of his interactions with Brienne, I always personally maintained and argued that he was never actually going to be anything other than a deeply flawed man who would literally do absolutely anything to protect himself, Cersei, and their progeny regardless of who else got hurt, even as he sometimes did the good and noble thing, and that's exactly the same thing I see in Daemon even having only watched one episode.

And speaking of Jaime and Cersei, their story is actually one of the only positives that GoT's ending produced for me even though it ends with their deaths because there was honestly no other way for their story to end.

Their story is also what I'd be paying attention to were my hatred for the ending of GoT abate to the point where I'd ever consider rewatching the series.

then I think you'll be happy with where Daemon's story is going is as well. Thankfully it's all written so the showrunners cannot mess it up too much.
