I don't know a whole lot about directing, but is there any particular directing characteristics that Tom used compared to other directors of the show that you've noticed? I'm trying to pick up on some, but as I've mentioned not having much knowledge about directing it's hard.

What would be awesome is a TalkVille episode where Tom talks specifically about all the episodes he directed, after they get to S5 of course. I'd love to learn more about his process as a director.

^ I think Tom's episodes are different from other episodes of Smallville. There are little things that Tom has added in each one.

With "Fragile", I believe it was just the attention to detail like with all the scenes with the glass. For example, the "Nice Glasses" moment and then showing the glasses breaking in the guys' eyes red.

I don't know whether that's just trying to be honest or just mean. Comes across as mean, telling someone that wasn't their best work to me.

Yeah There's better ways to express if you're not happy with someone's work. Especially if that person is probably not liking their own work anyway, but it still hurts to be told like that.
