I think Angelus on ATS didn't have the impact on the gang that he had on the Scoobie's on Buffy, but then again, they knew what they were up against & were mentally prepared for Angelus, unlike Buffy in s2.

In Season 2 of BtVS, it was such a shock to everyone. I mean, he had all of them fooled for a while that he was still Angel

Plus they probably didn't even think that it was possible that he could go back to being Angelus - let alone how bad Angelus was!

The fang gang knew what they were doing, it doesn't mean it wasn't hard, but they knew what they were getting into.

I don't really remember them ever discussing how bad Angelus was until after he returned

You mean on Angel? It was implied that they'd all heard about it, I think most of it would have been talked about offscreen. I don't think the audience needed the reminder.

Plus Angel would tell them stories about Angelus' doings like when a old friend/acquaintance of Angelus came to town like in Somnambulist, Heartthrob or make mention in WITW what he did to those sitting around him at the opera.

But I think that comes from a lack of information about Angelus that the Scoobies had directly on hand

They didn't have a bunch of stuff on him, plus they didn't anticipate he could come back.
