Fred: People might start to talk.
Gunn: Why would they?

FRED: I'm being ridiculous, I know. It's just, I don't have a lot of
experience in this area. I spent the last five years in a cave.
Gunn: Yeah, I know what that's like.
Fred: How could you?

After spending years in a hell dimension where humans
Are treated as slaves, Fred Burkle is nothing short of a
Survivor. Quirky and brilliant, Fred becomes a wonderful
Addition to the Angel Investigations team.

"She survived. Girl's strong."

Growing up on the streets is never easy, especially when
You’re fighting vampires. Gunn is tough and street smart.
His fighting skills and connections are crucial to the Angel
Investigations team, as is his much needed comedic relief.

"Maybe it's not so much magical but chemical when two people
are attracted. Maybe it's like the DNA knows what it needs and
when it finds it, nothing can get in its way. It just takes it."

I did say I was going to post an Illyria/Gunn moment from the comics for you!
Check this out.

I know Illyria isn't Fred but she had Fred memories by the end of season 5 continuing on to the comics and it just was so perfect to see Vampire!Gunn without a soul breaking down to her....
Illyria even mentioned she feel this need to protect him because of Fred.

It was nice to see the comics actually remember they had a romance... since season 5 of ATS and the end of season 4 of ATS was ridiculous with Fred/Gunn's history....

In the photo, Illyria tells Gunn she can find a way to restore time to fix what happened to him! She really doesn't like him hurting, and Gunn doesn't believe she can help him since he's about lost gone and saw that Illyria was a mess as well.

I'm happy to hear that they kinda acknowledged Gunn/Fred through Illyria too. I think that if there is still a part of Fred in her, then of course Gunn would have to mean a lot to her

& I bet Gunn still thinks about Fred all the time when he's around Illyira, how could he not?

^ Yup it's very strongly acknowledge! She was referred to as his "guardian" for a comic series because she was watching over him to make sure nothing bad happened to him.

The love Fred has for Gunn is strong on Illyria. lol

So I think personally you would have loved this Gunn as a vampire storyline for that! we even got a little glimpse of a Fred/Gunn scene and it explains why being around Illyria just feels right for Gunn since she does have some Fred still in her because of the memories.

I felt they really cared about writing a good Gunn arc and if you are a Fred/Gunn fan, it made up for them being forgotten about in season 5 and a bit disrespected at the end of season 4.

Yeah, you would have loved it! It was a whole issue devoted to Illyria and Gunn's relationship which was intriguing seeing as how they didn't have much of one during season 5... it was all about Wesley or even Spike and Gunn was sort of nonexistent.

Yes she is clearly the love of his life which is why Gunn feels this comfort around Illyira over everyone else.
He was even trying to force her back into Fred at one point since Illyria can switch between them to.

I think before Gunn said he missed her and she wondered if he was talking about her or Fred... it was a mixture of them both.
