I really missed the P/J interactions in Season 2 too, and assumed the writers knew their dynamic worked so well that they used it for his relationship with another girl since he couldn't have Joey. (Except it didn't measure up, of course.) They just made her richer and more neurotic about her grades. I figured they were being lazy, and that maybe they didn't want both girls bantering with Pacey in the same frame and highlighting all of the similarities. But... Now that you ask, I wonder if they kept them apart because he couldn't be with Joey YET, and they didn't want US to catch on to how great they would be together... A bunch of people were P/J fans from the snail-hunting episode or Beauty Pageant. After Season 2 made me realize how much I hated Dawson both as a character and as a boyfriend for my still-favorite-at-the-time Joey, a simple P/J fan-fiction I read during the summer hiatus between Season 2 and Season 3 opened my eyes to how perfect they would be. That was all it took. I always loved Pacey, but he became irresistibly hot in Season 2, and I think if I saw them together in just a few more episodes I would have been like "FUG Jack! Get with PACEY!" (See what I did there? Lol I love how Clumsy Jack turned varsity.) But she couldn't get with Pacey yet, they needed her for Jack's storyline! Kevin Williamson had Jack's storyline already in mind from the beginning, if I remember correctly. So maybe all of that is why. Because it was really, really obvious how they completely and totally dropped Pacey and Joey's scenes together. They did the same thing in Season 5. Aww, how majestic is this ship!  First, in Season 2, the writers had to pretend like Pacey and Joey weren't friends who totally had a relationship that was separate from Dawson, one in which they confided in each other and encouraged each other when they were both feeling particularly low. Then, in Season 4, they had break them up in a painfully coerced and completely out of character fashion. After that, in Season 5, the writers pretended they were virtual strangers again! Why? Because the moment they exchange more than a few lines of banter you (I) start wondering why aren't they making out right now??Edited to Add: That would have been extremely accommodating of the writers if it was just due to their break up! It's possible, they often said it was like family down there. But I think they were still dating in Season 2. By all accounts I heard they were together for over a year. They obviously met in 1997 to begin filming, and when I Googled it just now and I'm seeing some sources state they broke up in 1999. If that's true it would explain why some of those kisses were *particularly* steamy, that was some post-breakup angst right there, poor guys! If I was Katie -- depending on the circumstances of their breakup -- all of those lovey-dovey scenes they had to film together definitely would have led to a relapse or two if you get my drift! __________________

Like I said before, I think the reasons they kept Pacey and Joey apart in instances like S2, the end of S4, and S5 was so their chemistry didn't overshadow the other pairings IE Dawson/Joey, Pacey/Andie, Pacey/Audry, etc. The other pairings always paled in comparison to the goldmine chemistry that Pacey and Joey had. I've seen other shows do the same, they keep the hotter pairing away from each other to help force the stale popcorn couple down your throat instead. KW also said after seeing their explosive chemistry in S1, they had to put a lid over it cause they had to do D/J zzz so there you go. I've always heard JJ and KH broke up before S3, I still can't imagine the awkwardness of having to film their characters getting together right after they broke up in real life but they never let it show on the show. It was still as hot and natural as ever. True professionals!
