It's a bit complicated Today is "Vendredi Saint" (holy friday) but we're working (UK and Germany are not), Easter is on Sunday (it's always a sunday) and the following monday is a holiday too. For a few cities (in Alsace and Moselle) today is a holiday though, they used to be german (before the war) and they kept some of the rules when it comes to religion, including holidays. In France we have total separation of the state and the church, except in those two areas.
Not sure I was clean, it's easier to explain in french (I put a few Wikipedia links)

It all makes sense now. It's basically what we have here but we have no holiday on Monday.

I loved it when I lived in Metz (in Moselle) cause I had an even longer week end But the best was when I was living in Senegal, we had most of the french holidays cause it was a french HS but we also had all of the Senegal holidays

Sometimes I miss HS for the simple fact that there were vacations. When you're an adult, even if you get a break from school, you probably have to work. And if you just work, you never get a week off of work for any holiday.

It was awesome And interesting too, some of the holidays were muslim ones (Islam is the main religion) and it's interesting to see how they celebrate it

I can only imagine. I live near one of the largest Muslim populations in the country yet I've never actually seen how any of their celebrations take place. I, admittedly, don't know a lot about their holidays.

It's very festive and it reminds me of some of the jewish celebration (their religions are so similar, shame they seem to hate each other in some parts of the world). That's what I never liked about roman catholicism, it's so boring most of the time Way too ceremonial.
What I loved about Dakar though is that even Muslims celebrate Christmas

I think it's nice to see the celebratory side of Islam. People have such a negative impression of the religion.

A minority of stupid people (and most of them seem to live near Paris, yay) give the religion a bad name. I hate this. I have many muslim friends and none of them are crazy people wearing the islamic veil and vowing to kill non muslim people It makes me sad how religion can make people crazy, I just don't get it (I'm an agnostic). Like the crazy pro life christian? "I believe that life is precious so i'm gonna kill doctors who practice abortions" Yeah right

That always confuses me. I'm like, "How is the worth of an unborn fetus more so than that of an existing human being?" I get that some people don't agree with abortion. Personally, I'm not a big fan of all abortion practices but..that's not my body and that's not my choice. And I am not going to look down on someone who decides to have one. I'm also not going to blow them up.
