I agree that Dawson was Joey's focus in season 1. Joey does subconsciously have an attraction to Pacey. Why the comments when they are watching the video of him and Tamara and she says the guy with the brown hair and throbbing neck muscles. She compares him to Dawson in the beginning of Detention with the biceps comment. The flirting with him when drunk and starts touching his chest and brushes his arm and says she doesn't say it enough, but he's a terrific friend. I think he just felt she wasn't into him and was ok with it because it was not love. They don't even discuss it in the next two episodes. They both just ignored it because it wasn't that big a deal to him. I think he would of been awkward, not wanting to go to the icehouse and see her




very true. He couldn't get rid of his feelings because he was totally in love with her. He still thinks he has no chance and even chickens out when he was going to tell her at the end of 314 because he's seen no indication that she has fallen for him too. We, as an audience have seen it. She is embarrassed and hides it from him. Like her blushing after she says he needs to read between the banter, but turning her head. Her jealousy of him kissing Jen. He still didn't think it meant anything. He blushing when talking to Andie about Pacey at Thanksgiving. Her looking guilty for going out with AJ and thinking of him while kissing AJ. Her being mad about his suspension and is about to say "I guess I thought something else". It's not until 317 when she says "you were the first person I thought of" like he was on her mind. I was watching on youtube and his face starts to light up as he says "what does that mean Jo" like he sees this is his chance

Thanks Emily....for opening the new thread....great job as usual...how have you been...and Jenn you too....I miss you guys...
I know everyone has been so busy....but we always have time to check out our fav place...LOL...LOL

Great deconstruction guys...you are all making valid points...

and ITA...that in season 1...their friendship...relationship...non-relationship...is evolving...they always seem to wind up being there for one another...and start to realize that there is something about each other...that they are starting to like...

and it really hits Pacey in the episode double date...his feelings move "beyond friendship"...like Dawson says...and at the end of the episode when he kisses her...I think she is shocked...she has been so enthralled in her "friendship-relationship" with Dawson...that she hasn't recognized this other life-long friend..
she banters with him daily...and he calls her on things that Dawson doesn't even recognize...like when she was noticing the other boy...the one she kissed...Pacey notices that she is looking at him...not Dawson...and she tries to deny it...and says.."What Boy"...and Pacey tells her right out...."The one you're breaking your neck to see"....I also think the showrunners let you see how much alike they both are...and seasons later...Gretchen calls it..."Two scrappy underdogs"

When she rejects his kiss...he realizes its because she is thinking of Dawson...
something once again...that no one else recognizes but him...Not even "sleep at the wheel Dawson".....but she isn't mad at Pacey...she just asks..."Why would you"...and then smiles...and tries to be really nice...she realizes that he is sincere and the sarcasim stays bottled up...and the moment is very sweet...

But Pacey...is pissed....not at her...at Dawson...because he thinks his friend is stringing her along...and I think he is worried that Joey is going to get hurt...
and that is why at the end of the episode.... full of frustration... he pushes Dawson into a cornor...you have to chose is it going to be the blonde or the brunette...and then in the episode "Beauty Contest"...Dawson asks Pacey...have you seen Joey...and says He misses her...and once again Pacey is frustrated by his friend...
and very sarcastic and upset says to Dawson..."you don't want her...but you don't want anyone else to have her either"...of couse...meaning himself...This line...puts the handwriting on the wall...he is interrested...big time....and by the last episode...he goes and visits Joey at the Icehouse...he has troubles at home and needs someone to talk to....and the tide has changed...it's not Dawson this time...it's Joey...their relationship has evolved...its deeper now...their trust has slowly been developed...and even though they are not ready to understand their feelings...the groundwork is layed...and he challenges her again...about her dad...and then takes her to see him...he is always there for her...quietly...and as they both go off to explore other relationships...the seeds of love have been planted...and by the time they both get their hearts broke...once or twice...they are there once again for each other...
and the showrunners...began their Journey to each others heart...right from the get go of season 3...and when Dawson asks Pacey to watch after Joey...Pacey doesn't want to...because he knows that his underlying feelings for her...are going to get in the way...he always knew that Dawson would break her heart...and by the very next episode...she is helping him...understand his own broken heart...

These two are star-crossed lovers...love that is just meant to be...They are always there for each other....and no matter what you throw at it...or how many times they fall...they always find their way home....and we all know....that....
"Home is where the heart is"!!!

katie, I love reading your posts. You give so much insite. I have to disagree a little. Yes, she rejected him, but she said it was because she wasn't attracted to him. Of course, we had subtle mentions over the season where you can see she is, but that is what she says. He says she probably would have been thinking of someone else. People kiss people all the time even if they are in love with others if they feel an attraction. He even subtlety hints this to Jen in 316 that his rugged charms are not on her radar. JMO

I do agree that they were there for each other in season 1 and he did challenge to see her father. When she goes with Dawson, she didn't even talk to him. Later in the episode, Pacey convinces her to go back and tells her his story about his father. In 301, I think you have a point in a way. I think Pacey was still waiting for Andie to come back and wasn't thinking of Joey as annoying more than a pretty girl he doesn't get along with. He makes the effort to go to her when she's hurting, even though she tells him to leaves. She eventually gives in and let's him comfort her

youguys, going back to the fact that he is frustrated with Dawson many times in Season 1 as mentioned by Katie, this also happens in Four to Tango right? When Dawson gets all pissy because he thinks they're sneaking around behind his back. I understand why but at the same time could never figure out why Pace makes such a big point of saying to Dawson the next guy that comes along for Joey IS NOT going to be his best friend, nor ask for his permission. If Pacey is in fact in love with Joey then, what was the point of saying that to his best friend when it's obvious this thing was going to come to a head sooner or later? I understand why Pacey throughout S3 is incapable of not telling Dawson about Joey but he has so many more opportunities to than in say the similar situation in Double Date where telling Dawson although wasn't easy because of the whole Joey-Dawson will they-wont they drama everyone knew about, wasn't such a big drama. I'm trying to figure out if Dawson and Pacey's friendship was beginning to fail in S3 and that's why telling him in S1 was so hard? I've just watched Goodbye Yellowbrick Road/Joey Potter and the Capeside Redemption (i can't remember which one it's in) but Dawson says to Pacey that the truth is they haven't been friends for a long time, implying even before Joey?? I'm confusing myself, hope that made sense!

I never thought he was in love with Joey in season one but he liked her alot and that does = feelings. I think by season 3 though he had bottled what real feeling he had for her up and tried to forget about them that when he finally realised that he was in love with her it was kinda a shock to the system. I was a P/j'er from the beginning and when I saw P/A the banter and all, I knew where it was going and excepted it cuz they were cute together but I never gave up hope for P/J. I even yelled at the screen sevral time durring the show about how blind joey was being and that fact that dawson didnt even notice. I mean come'on hes supposed to be Pacey's best friend, but I guess he was just to rapped up in his own world to see the way his friend was looking at his other friend. I saw it almost from the beginning. Pacey just noticed her way to much and picked on her way to much. This picking on her was what I really noticed, It was never mean spirited. I ran into this alot in real life, a guy or girl picked on the other becuase thats how they could vent attraction. I always thought Pacey had an attraction to Joey but only realised he liked her in Double Date.

I think Pacey tells Dawson the next guy who comes along isn't going to be his best friend because Pacey didn't think he had a chance with Joey. He tells Jen that she can't even stand to be in the same room with him without gagging when Jen points out she was jealous of them kissing. He doesn't want to believe it because he doesn't want to get his hopes up that she has feelings for him


I even have the desktop from FTT. Jen totally knew something was happening between PJ, even if they were in denial. Joey even alludes to him spending time with Jen like it sort of bothers her

I think what Dawson meant was Pacey made them competitors when he fell in love with Joey in season 3. Notice how Dawson say it's not because of what happened with Joey, even though it destroyed him. He said Pacey had a choice like ignoring his feelings for Joey, but he didn't. This made them competitors, by competing for Joey's love. Dawson couldn't get over the fact that chose Pacey over him. That's what I got from it


pueblo, I guess you could say he had feelings for her, but I agree it wasn't love in season 1. There's even that line in season 4 when she says he didn't even like her a few years a go. He says you always tease the ones you love

lauren, we all know Pacey didn't do anything wrong. It's Dawson who makes it seem like PJ were wrong. Dawson didn't show any interest in Joey in season 3 until 318 when Pacey was already in love with her. Dawson looks at it as betrayal because he thinks Joey is his, whether they or together or not

I don't think he went out with Gretchen to get back at anyone or to see how anybody would react, personally i don't think Dawson would do something like that.I think it was good for Dawson to enter into a relationship with someone new like Gretchen, it was nice to watch.
