I don't think he did it just because of Kelly. Val was super sexy. Nobody needs an excuse to make out with her. Brandon was quite aware of her sexiness since she showed up. He was attracted to her. That does not diminish his feelings for Kelly. A person can be in love with somebody and be sexually attracted to the others. (Well, look at him with Emma in S8.) It's not a big thing, really. What is for sure is that he would not have started anything with Val hadn't he and Kelly broken up.
