For me a lot about having a pet is just the companionship, but also I really like knowing I'm an animal's person? Like Eliza, she follows me everywhere and gets so excited when I walk in the door. Maintaining friendships with people is complicated and difficult (even great friendships!) and it's even worse when you're mentally ill, and sometimes I'm so tired I forget to text people back for days or I can't make plans due to being sick, and it's just so nice to have something in my life that thinks I'm the Greatest Person In The World simply by existing.
It wouldn't be fair to require that from any of my friends, but it's very easy with the cat.
